Globalization is the process by which everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, is becoming standardized around the world. This process has been in progress through the early days of history where explorers such as Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus developed world relations through trade, exchanging both knowledge and goods. This process has become far easier and accessible through the invention of the Internet, where people can exchange knowledge and ideas right from their computer screens. Many countries embrace the idea of globalization because it allows for production and distribution of products around the world, benefiting their economy and allowing access to remote products. Though globalization has united our…
Being a 16-year –old, and having taken my first semester of college classes this semester with my high school classes on top of that, all here at CSN, has been an unforgettable experience. On the other hand, from the three college classes I have enrolled in, including German 111, Communications 101, and Anthropology 101, I have, in my opinion, learned the most with my Anthropology 101 class. This class has been a great and interesting experience that has allowed me to view the world in a different way than most people. To illustrate, even though I thought most of the things we discussed in class like linguistics and archaeology were interesting, I consider learning about ethnology the most memorable and fascinating concept for me. To illustrate,…

In this video, Anthony Bourdain goes to Sub-Saharan Africa, specifically, Ghana. I can see how he chose to live the full experience rather than finding information about it in the internet. Since the beginning, I could clearly see the difficulty of their lifestyle and how different our cultures are i.e., clothes, music, food, etc. Ghana serves as a great example for the rest Africa because it transformed from an oppressed country to one who lets people exercise democratic activities. Even though their economy is struggling, it is headed towards growth.…

During the 19th century, the United States experienced a lot of growth, both in population and in square mileage. With the acquiring of western lands from Mexico after the Mexican American War, more and more people became interested in the westward frontier. The South, hungry for more land to grow their plantations, were eager for expansion. Northerners were also excited to expand, though not for all the same reasons the South wanted to expand. The new land was the perfect opportunity for the United States to grow and thrive.…
Comprehension: 1. Trask: Describe the pre-haole (pre-foreigner, European, white colonialism) political system in Hawai’i as an interdependent system, using incentive instead of oppression as a means of gaining status. Trask writes, “ … an interdependence was created where by the maka’ainana (people of land) were free to move with their ‘ohana (extended families) to live under an alibi of their choosing … the result was an incentive for the society’s leader to provide for all their constituents’ well-being and contentment. To fail to do so meant the loss of status and thus of mana for the ali’i (chiefs)”…

Globalization has affected the economic environment in some Latin American countries, causing individuals to lose sight of their traditional economy. In Chile, globalization has largely influenced the economic resources that the economy depends on. In the excerpt from the book The Wal-Mart Effect, Charles Fishman exemplified how Wal-Mart has become a global player, specifically focusing on how global markets have increasingly dominated the Chilean economy. Today, approximately sixty-five percent of the salmon that we eat is imported from Chile (Fishman, 2006). But, salmon is not native to Chile.…
The documentary; ‘Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth’ (2011), features Carlos Chan Chanuk, of the Lacondon Maya, who is studying to become a shaman. He lives amongst what was previously a thriving and lush rainforest in North America, which is now an island in the middle of cow ranches. Chan laments sadly that his people are losing touch with their gods. In this modern world they have disease and sicknesses, which Chan believes are because they have lost their belief and faith in their gods. Their connection with the universe and their gods is tenuous as the balance and harmony within that connection are no longer upheld by the practices handed down by their ancestors.…

Introduction Over the years, there has been significant controversy on whether globalization should be viewed as an advantage to the Caribbean, or perceived with aggression, as it has the ability to increase inequality amongst nations. It has had a significant impact on the countries’ economies throughout the years, and it continues to because of the rapid pace of technological advancements in today’s world. Evidence demonstrates that the economic growth has been declining in the Caribbean over the past 10 years by 2% annually, leaving some countries with negative growth (Hassan, 2007). For instance, Trinidad and Tobago, like any other developing nation, has not gained the maximum benefit of globalization but instead, has been experiencing…
When asked about the role of tourism in promoting cultural awareness, Professor Sally referred to how there were many cases that she saw in the Philippines where tourism development showcased cultural practices “that were considered to be distinctive and representative of certain ethnic groups in the Philippines and so for all the people who didn’t belong to those groups, it certainly increased their awareness of those groups and enhanced their appreciation and their recognition of those groups.” Being able to enjoy a cultural practice other than your own allows you to open your mind to learn more about other cultures. She underscores that those kinds of performances can enhance cultural awareness. However, Sally expresses the paradox she faced…
