At this step, the compound is stable and sits around until a source of proton is available to protonate. In the workup, the sulfuric acid is added to hydrolyze the product. The proton is bonded to the oxygen to making the final product neutral and a tertiary alcohol.
Experimental
In the beginning of the lab, a clean 100 mL round bottom flask, 1.002 g of Mg turnings, 4.5 mL of bromobenzene, heating mantle, stir bar, stir plate, water hoses, condenser, and grease were obtained. The bottom of the condenser was greased and connected to the flask. The heating pad was placed under the flask and the stir plate was placed under the heating pad. The water hoses were attached to the condenser and then the water was turned on. Next, the Mg turnings were placed in the flask and the stir plate was turned on. The instructor checked the apparatus and then put in 8 mL of anhydrous ether. The 4.5 mL of bromobenzene was added to the flask to make the Grignard reagent. The instructor added 12 mL of ether after the reaction changed colors clear to dark brown. The reaction was left to react for 30 minutes. During this time, 2.3 mL of methyl benzoate was obtained in a graduated cylinder and
