Humans are creatures of change. In modern times we seem to have “evolved”. Not just in the means of appearance additionally, in the way we think. In Beowulf, the epic, we see a very different Beowulf and Grendel. In other words, we see two very different perspectives compared to the film Beowulf and Grendel. Morality is the main idea that distinguishes the two works through the comparison and contrast of both Beowulf and Grendel.
In the epic, Beowulf, we see a heroic and God-like Beowulf. In the epic he is portrayed as almost invincible. He shows the qualities that a "perfect" hero would certainly display. He is not far from human as the rest of the characters. In fact, much of the chaos seen from him does not differ much from the chaos expressed from Beowulf and his men. However, Grendel in the movie has a motive for his actions. These motives derive from the shift in time and ideas. He now has rage built in him that he soon expresses through his evil ways. It was unfair how his father met his demise. He was killed simply because he crossed the path of the tribe. Now imagine the anger and sadness Grendel felt. What he wanted was revenge. Surprisingly, he did not kill the innocent and he ignored those who did not attack him. An example in the movie would be when Beowulf chases Grendel and Grendel would not attack him. The reason for that was because Beowulf had done nothing wrong. Even though evil surrounded Grendel, he still showed signs of having some morality. This is the shift from ancient times to modern times. This is where the example shows that morality, in ancient times, is a black and white picture which means that there is either good or bad. In modern times, we see that morality is more than just black and white. It is now an abstract idea that has many principles tied into
