The epic poem Beowulf is known as the oldest epic poem, it features the hero Beowulf who gains fame by fighting several monsters. Grendel is a monster who is the main antagonist for the first parts of the poem, who gets swiftly killed by Beowulf and is used as a stepping stone for Beowulf to progress as a hero. Grendel also appears in the novel of the same name where he gets a story of his own as the main character however, Grendel is shown to be a completely different character. The Grendel in that appears in the novel is different from the Grendel that appears in Beowulf. As the protagonist Grendel is changes and develops as the story progresses as shown in chapter 2. ““The world resists me and I resist the world… That all there is. The mountains are what I define them as.”” (Pg. 28). Grendel starts off knowing little to nothing of the world around him, so he starts exploring further away from his home. However, after a traumatic experience with the humans he develops his own philosophy about the world showing how intelligent a creature he is.
