One challenge that Gregory Maguire must have faced was making the timeless tale of Snow White and creating a different story with the same outline. One of the ways in which he does this is by including Vicente’s quest for the apples, the eighth dwarf, however the ending was also a surprise. In the Brothers Grimm tale, Snow White is awakened from her death when the poison apple is dislodged from her through as the dwarfs are giving her prince the coffin. In the Disney tale, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was wakened by a kiss from her prince.
