Before Gregor’s transformation, he acted as the backbone of the family, a necessity: “Gregor went on to earn so much money that he was able to bear, and indeed bore, the expense of the whole family” (Kafka, 1218). According to this statement, he was a highly-valued family member. In the beginning of the story his mother, his sister, the chief-clerk, and even the doctor (who gets turned away) comes to the door and check on him. Before his door opens, Gregor’s mother, father, sister, and even the Chief-clerk, all had a stable perception of Gregor, well stated by the Chief-clerk, “I had taken you for a quiet and sensible individual, but you seem set on indulging a bizarre array of moods” (Kafka, 1209).
After this transformation, his sister initially brings him food, and cleans his room. Accordingly, she takes authority and pride in her “being in charge”, but ultimately proposes that Gregor is weighing down the family. When she first enters the room, Gregor remains hidden, as his mom and sister are moving out his furniture. In her effort, she declares that his furniture should stay in the room so Gregor won’t feel abandoned, but gives in to his sister to have it moved out. In response, Gregor moves out onto a remaining photo on the wall, and his mother sees him and faints. This situation shows that his sister had the strongest power over what was happening to Gregor, which can be further demonstrated at the end of Gregor’s life when the text states: “His conviction that he needed to disappear was, if anything, still firmer than his sisters” (Kafka,
