EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Ocean Carriers Inc. is a global provider and operator of capesize dry bulk carriers carrying mainly iron ore. The objective of this analysis is to determine whether Ocean Carriers should launch the two year production of a new capsize carrier incurring costs of $39 million. To thoroughly analyze this decision, various factors should be considered such as net present value of future cash flows, current and future expectations of supply and demand determining costs of production and expected revenues from future orders. It is recommended to minimize costs that Ocean Carriers consider producing the capsize carrier in Hong Kong as it provides tax benefits as well as an optimal geographical location to receive resources.…

Ships are the global transportation of people and cargo by sea, but it can also be extremely harmful to the planet. The reason why ships can be extremely harmful to the planet is shipbreaking. Shipbreaking is when rundown ships around 25-30 years old are broken down to metals for reuse. I encourage to reinforce stronger environmental and labour laws on shipbreaking because it can lead to chemicals and oil leaking out to sea. Workers who are also involved in shipbreaking have zero to little safety guidance and safety equipment.…

2.3.1. ECONOMIC BARRIERS - MARKET BARRIERS As discussed previously, market barriers are obstacles that contribute to the slow diffusion and adoption of energy efficiency measures and before them, companies behave rationally (Brown 2001; Sorrell et al., 2004; Rehmatulla and Smith 2015a). Market barriers include: • Credit constraints and capital costs: high initial payments implied by the adoption of new technologies to be installed on ships during the shipbuilding process and the implementation of modern retrofit ships (Stulgis et al. , 2014) sometimes require external financing.…

One of the most influential moves involved in this was the Hong Kong Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships 2009. The main aim of this was to lessen the dangers of ship dismantling. The convention turned the ‘green passport’ into an ‘inventory of hazardous materials’. Once the Hong Kong Convention is enforced all vessels, across the world, over the weight of 500GT will have to carry an inventory of hazardous materials (or green passport as it was previously known). According to this, ships will be required to have an initial survey to verify the inventory of hazardous materials, additional surveys during the life of the ship, and a final survey prior to recycling.…

The tourism industry should be concerned not only about profitability, but also about its impact on the global environment. One example is TUIfly, a German airline corporation, that sets new environmental standards. In 1998, when the oil price was still below 20 dollars per barrel, TUIfly has already started to replace the old generation aircraft of type Boing 737 Classic with the new Boeing 737-800. At that time, TUIfly was a pioneer in investing in sustainable efficiency. Protecting the environment plays a leading role in the company’s philosophy.…
