Greek life is one of the most iconic aspects of the college students experience. If you go to a college that has a Greek Life presence on campus, it will inevitably be an influential aspect of your college experience, regardless of personal membership. “Are fraternities acting in an ethical manner, requiring good behavior and punishing poor decisions? Or are they keeping a cool distance from the mayhem, knowing full well that it occurs with regularity?” (Flanagan). Many individuals have never taken out the time to research and study some of the hidden secrets about fraternities. However, author Caitlin Flanagan wrote “The Dark Power of Fraternities” published in 2014 in The Atlantic, and she argues all of the hidden flaws within fraternities that are often covered up.…

“It’s not what it looks like”, this is what the majority of members of a sorority or fraternity would respond after being asked about Greek life. Why is that they feel like they have to say that? One word: Marketing. The way sororities and fraternities are portrayed to the public gives off a bad image and reputation about the members and their community. Any person who has not been part of Greek life and does not have any information about this community and its activities they would think sororities and fraternities are just a big house full of college people just having fun, drinking, and sleeping around.…

Texas Lutheran College has a variety of clubs and fraternities that its students belong to on campus. Both boys and girls had belonged to these organizations, which celebrated a bond of unity among its members. Students participated in activities associated with a club that improved their traits and talents as well as associate themselves with people of a particular social group. The members of the fraternities and clubs installed a sense of values and culture within their members.…

This type of behavior is extremely common in the state of Alabama where southern roots remain strong in communities. This influence reaches even into the social structure of the south’s biggest universities. Although the racism continues to be present in the University of Alabama Greek system, forced integration would only cause harm to the intricate process and all parties involved. Fraternity and Sorority organizations are private with their own bylaws and traditions. There is no reason for these organizations to be regulated by any university.…

I would also say that that is what we emphasize most. While forming these lifetime friendships, the greek organizations also value the opportunity to give back to the community as a group, and develop leadership and interpersonal skills. In 2015, a college fraternity from the University of Oklahoma broke the news when a bus full of Sigma Alpha Epsilon members were heard chanting racist words. Because of this incident, many people have asked themselves if the sorority and fraternity systems are causing more harm than good. The procedure of entering the greek life is the concept of exclusion and is a competition based off of first impressions. If you do not fit a fraternity's stereotype, you most likely won’t get a letter inviting you to join their brotherhood. But at the same time, not all greek life should be punished if they have not done anything wrong.…

or any sorority for that matter, except for what I hear on my college campus, which are basically stigmas (good and bad) that are tied to each sorority. After months and months of my ears being flooded with “Zeta this, Gamma Rho that, AKA this, and Delta that,” and my friends telling me that I should pledge Delta because I’m very blunt and have an attitude, I literally thought the whole sorority (sisterhood) and fraternity (brotherhood) thing was stupid and childish. I told myself that I would never be apart of any sisterhood and I would be my own support, and my own organization. However, after continued pestering from my friends about how I should become a Delta because of my fitted Delta personality, I decided to do some research. The one thing that sold me on wanting to become a…

In Fraternity and Sorority Alcohol Use: Does Race Matter?, Michael Capece, David Schantz, and Rebecca Wakeman expound upon one of these behaviors, specifically detailing the general perception of alcohol consumption within fraternities and sororities and across two different races, from the point of view of research.…
