The basis of society has evolved around ethics since the beginning of humanity. In the Bible, the first unethical decision was made when Eve gave into sinful temptation and took a bite from the fruit in the garden of Eden. Everyone in history has had to make multiple ethical decisions because we unknowingly deal with ethics in almost every decision we make where there are possible positive and negative outcomes. Ethics are a set of moral standards that are a deciding factor in what one thinks is right and wrong. The ethical decisions that have been made since the beginning of time have truly shaped mankind into how it is today. In today’s day and age, we face many modern ethical dilemmas that generations before us did not encounter. The act of gratuity started in 17th century England. The word “tip” was said to be an acronym meaning “To Insure Promptitude.” The word tip was printed on the bowls in British coffeehouses at the time (Hiskey). As for Europe today, gratuity is handled more loosely in comparison to American culture. European waiters and waitresses are paid much better than Americans in the hospitality field, making a tip in Europe a bonus rather than a source of income. Tipping is also handled differently given the country within Europe. Democratic countries such as Britain and France practice gratuity similarly to America and is viewed as being all in all ethical. In some scenarios, there is an included service charge with the bill and a tip is only given for phenomenal service. In other countries tips are expected and in very few cases there are no tips at all (Steves).
