Grapes Group Observation Essay

The aim with the Grapes group is to be able to count sequentially with numbers above 1. The Grapes group is the lowest group of the class and has no areas where the students are confident to perform. The lesson on Monday has the focus of developing their addition ability foundation. Counting in sequential patterns demonstrates basic additive ability and provides insight on children's additive and place value ability. In this lesson students will be using materials initially to count up in groups just to help them form the knowledge of how to do so if they do not have it already (as they are the lowest group.) They will proceed off using materials if they can start counting up in threes. “Progression to Using Number Properties is promoted by increasing the complexity or size of the numbers involved.” (Ministry of Education, 2008, pg 5) There is one student in this group who is far behind …show more content…
By following up the two days with the same concept except that they count opposite ways, they will be able to find the link during this activity to solve problems and this will help them remember the information. “Learning through understanding involves learning and remembering by understanding the relationships among ideas and information.” (Keeley, 2011) By using a recap lesson after both lesson, the students will find the relationship between the counting and this will help their brain to retain this information. This will come in handy since this is the lowest group and remembering the basic foundation relationships and information like this is important for them to remember before learning new things. Children will work on this individually, the first questions are easier to accommodate those that are on the lower end of this group and so that they can all get back into it on a basic
