The objectives of the study were to compare youth from divorced and intact families on the extent to which their relationship with their grandparents predicted three indices of psychological adjustment. The study recruited 324 adolescents aged 17 to 20 years old from high schools and entry-level psychology classes at a university in north Texas, and had them report on the quality of their relationships with their maternal grandmothers. (2007). This study examined the effects of caring for grandchildren on health behaviours and mental and physical health among older adults. The study was conducted by utilising data from Waves 4, 5, and 6 (1998-2002) of the Health and Retirement Study (HRS), which is a nationally representative study of persons older than 50. Once participants entered the study, they are interviewed every two years. The final sample size of was 12872, which is a key strength of the study. The respondents, aged 50-80 were interviewed every two years and asked questions regarding the level of care that they provide to their grandchildren, and questions regarding their health and health behaviour, such as smoking, problem drinking, vigorous exercise, obesity, depressive symptoms, chronic conditions, functional limitations etc. The results for this study show that declination in health is not an inevitable consequence of childcare, and caring for grandchildren does not worsen prior poor health. Furthermore, the study found that caring for grandchildren has no widespread or dramatic negative effects on grandparent’s health and health behaviours.
