The first nursing theorist was Florence Nightingale, but through the years other nurses have added to her theory and expanded upon the ever-changing profession with theories of their own. Defining these nursing theories or categorizing them can be quite a task and many have tried. The development of nursing theory has aspired nursing to develop into a scientific discipline (Jolley 1989) However, the development of nursing theory should be put into the context of the on-going professionalization. Nursing theory was Initially associated with securing profession autonomy from the medical profession. The theories are used to descried the care that nurses provide, to inform the foundation of clinical decision making.

It is the broadest in scope, represents the most abstract level of development, and addresses the broad phenomena of concern within the discipline. Typically, a grand theory is not intended to provide guidance for the formation of specific nursing interventions, but rather provides an overall framework for structuring broad, abstract ideas (Fawcett, 1993). An example of a grand theory is Florence Nightingale focus on the patients environment this model is to alter the patient's environment in order to affect change in his or her health. The environmental factors that affect health, as identified in the theory, are: fresh air, pure water, sufficient food supplies, efficient drainage, cleanliness of the patient and environment, and light. If any of these areas is lacking, the patient may experience diminished health., which incorporates the patients' surrounding environment in his or her nursing care
