In the movie Gran Torino, there were many lessons both taught and learned. Some lessons were taught using good methods and some lessons were taught using bad methods. Since there were many different ethnicities and cultures in this movie, the lessons were also learned differently. The teachers became the students and the students became the teachers. When living in a neighborhood with neighbors of different cultures and ethnicities, trying to communicate could be very difficult, so everyone have to learn how to communicate with each other.

One lesson that was taught in Gran Torino was how to become a man. It was taught by Tao’s cousins to Tao. The mission was to get Tao to steal his neighbor, otherwise known as Walt’s Gran Torino. Tao was

One of the lessons taught was that he was letting a girl that liked him get away. He taught Tao this by telling him that he had the most beautiful wife in the world, and he knows that Tao is letting the girl get away with the “Three stooges.” Another lesson was how to do housework. Walt did not really show Tao how to do housework, instead he gave him the instructions and the tools. The third thing Walt taught Tao how to do was get a job. Walt taught Tao with the trial and error method after giving both instructions and an example. Tao learned how to talk to men, keep eye contact, and shake a man’s hand. He learned how to talk to men because he needed a job, so he watched Walt talk to a man first, then tried to talk to the man similar to the way Walt talked to him. His attempt failed the first time, so the two men corrected him. Some of the pointers they gave him were to first say hello, then talk about the problems in his relationship and with his car. Do not swear at the person, instead, talk about a person that is not in the room like a boss or a girlfriend. Talk about how his boss messed him over. Be polite but do not kiss butt. It was time for him to try again, but before he went outside again, Walt told him not to talk about the fact that he did not have a girl, a job, a car, a future, and a penis. He came back in and embarrassed himself. Tao eventually learned that although those things does not apply

In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. I agree with those ; hence, who think Shirley was a great teacher because he actually did something for his student…

They use 4 main writing strategies in their article; Take on the Big Concepts, Call Out the Quiet Argument, Break Down Your Reasons, and Support Your Reasons. Hawley and Nieto take on the big concept by stating that there are “shameful differences in the academic outcomes and graduation rates of students of color compared too many Asian and white students” (Hawley and Nieto 1). Every time you go to another country, especially for the first time, you get to experience what it is like to be part of a minority. The first time I walked into one of the classrooms at the Polytechnic of Turin, I sensed prejudice, from both the instructor and my classmates. After two years, only one of the instructors and about three of the students in my class acknowledged, introduced themselves, and offered to help me and two other foreign students. I felt the loneliness of being a hispanic student in Italy, and recognized the lack of fellowship among engineering students. By the end of the graduate program and without any special accommodations, I had worked twice as hard to take my final oral examinations in the Italian language and completed…

From the inevitability of change to the importance of non-action, the Tao-te-Ching is truly full of life lessons that deserve extensive analysis; however, one of the most prevalent and recurring themes is balance and its importance. Throughout Cultural Perspectives, many authors have addressed this same theme. Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, Plato, and Saint Augustine have all discussed this important topic; however, Aristotle best complements and contrasts Lao Tzu’s Tao-te-Ching in his work Nichmachean Ethics. When comparing and contrasting these two texts, one can see that these two authors had very similar ideas on the concept of balance. When comparing the two texts’ thoughts…

This Halloween I observed costumes worn by students on campus and costumes worn by audience members at a showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show I attended that day. I assessed that the individuals I saw on campus held the status of a college student because they were from the ages of 18 to 21 and spent the holiday with peers at the IUB college campus. I also determined that they were from low-to-upper middle class families because they had some form of expendable income to spend on Halloween costumes. The audience members at the RHPS showing varied in age, gender identification, sexual orientation, and social group identification, however there was no obvious groupings or trends regarding their social class.…
