Gram Staining

After my gram staining I was able to comfortably eliminate all of the gram negative results. This encouraged me in knowing that I was able to execute an experiment efficiently enough to eliminate some of my choices. I was also able to eliminate all of the streptococcus bacteria because my bacteria was in clusters and not in a chain arrangement. Gram staining also helped me in eliminating the bacilli because my interpretation of the observation was that my unknown bacteria was spherical in nature and not a rod. This quickly led me to Staphylococcus epidermidis and Enterococcus avium. The Lanagram experiment helped to solidify the road I was on by confirming that my bacteria was gram positive due to not changing to yellow. Blood Agar was the …show more content…
This led staphylococcus to be the only one that was not eliminated up to this point. When I learned that my chosen bacteria did not produce endospores I began to truly believe my unknown bacteria was Staphylococcus epidermidis. Unfortunately, I was unable to participate with the CNA and MSA experiment. This would have helped greatly in ensuring that I truly had chosen the right bacteria. CNA would have been able to tell me if hemolysin was produced and would have been a big key to confirming my hypothesis. Even more unfortunate was missing the MSA experiment. This would have let me determine if my bacteria produced growth. If it didn’t it would have ruled my bacteria out. The inability to perform these test may be my undoing when it comes to picking the correct one. MacConkey agar , EMB and Hektoen all assisted me in confirming that my bacteria is gram positive. My chosen bacteria did not change colors in any of these experiments. These experiments would have had an observable visual reaction. Upon completing all of my experiments I concluded that the only bacteria that was consistent with all of my findings was Staphylococcus
