As a result of studies indicating up to 25% of 16-year old drivers received a ticket or had been involved in an accident, the state of Colorado enacted what they refer to as the Graduated Driver License Law (GDL). For this reason, the requirements of obtaining a learners permit involve a few stages, depending upon the age of the student.
If the student is between the ages of 15 to 15 ½, they need to complete a 30 hour driver education course to obtain their driver’s education permit. If between 15 ½ and 16 years of age, students can choose between completing the 30 hour driver's education course or taking a 4 hour driver's awareness class in order receive their driver’s awareness permit.
