Professor Jerry Farber’s article “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System” has the intention of persuading college students that the current grading system is not effective by using rhetorical questions to imply its inefficiency, pathos to provoke the reader, and specific diction to help the article resonate with the audience; he even proposes a new grading system. Faber’s solution to the current grading system is to change it entirely, and, in place, have students receive credit or no credit for classes. In this system of grading, receiving a no credit would not have a penalty on the student’s record, but, instead, the records would only have classes where the student earned a credit making this different from the pass-fail grading system.…

I think Hal shouuld pass because, it seems that its not his test and quiz grades thats making him fail, so i think he should pass. He is only failing because of homework, but doing good on test/quizes, that means he knows what he is doing its just the homework. The first quartile is 78, the median is 84, and the third quartile is 88. Since his test scores are so high couldn't you just let him take one more test so he get at least a 70 overall average? There is no question that the American education system is flawed and is not the most effective to teach students a broad range of academic subjects. Students are graded on the ability to reproduce knowledge onto a piece of paper after days, weeks, or months of studying a topic. The lack of this ability results in failure to earn a passing grade in the subject matter. If the student can reproduce the desired knowledge at a highly proficient rate, they receive a rating that distinguishes them from other students. In “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System,” an article written by Jerry Farber, a professor of English at the University of California at San Diego, the grading system is put at fault for the flawed educational system.…

I remember the first time I wrote an essay that was being graded at the college level. This was in my junior year when I took AP Language and Composition, our first essay was a rhetorical analysis essay from a very old excerpt that used old english and was very hard to read. When I first started reading the passage I started to get nervous because I didn't understand what the text was saying but then I started to annotate and the passage began to make sense. I found many rhetorical strategies that the author used and I then began to outline the essay in my head.…

The grade that I received for my Macroeconomics class, ECON 1402, taught by Professor Ardavan Mobasheri in Spring 2016, is not reflective of the effort I put into the class and is the result of various issues regarding how the class strayed from the syllabus. I wish to request a grade change for the overall class. After passing my Microeconomics class in the Fall, I had hoped that I would do well in my Macroeconomics class the following semester. I received an F for the class which means that if I cannot receive a better grade, I will have to take it again in the fall semester of 2016 as it is required for my double-major in International Relations and Modern Languages. In terms of grading, we were graded based on four items: the midterm exam, the final exam, homework assignments, and class participation/attendance.…

I emailed my TA, Ariana, on December 24th to see what I could have done differently in order to not have been deducted 5 points, but she responded five days later saying she was traveling and would look into during week 1. This last Friday, the 12th, she responded saying that I received a 95% for my "superior work" in section, but a 100% merits an "extraordinary capacity. " While I understand the expectation and reasoning behind each letter grade, I do believe that my effort and work in section merits that 100%. For example, every week I type out summaries of each article so that I can better recall the important ideas and use this to facilitate my commentary during discussions in section.…
