During World War II, African Americans faced escalating tensions full of racial discrimination. In an article from the 3/3/1942 edition of the Kansas City newspaper, The Plainsdealer, called “Join the NAACP” from the “African American Newspaper Series 1, 1827-1998” database, the need for active NAACP membership in fighting for African American rights is raised. By drawing on the historical narrative from the course readings, the primary source being presented can correlate to the need to fight the oppression of fascism at home and abroad. The language and rhetoric, or rather the meaning behind the message being presented in “Join the NAACP,” can be traced to the types of segregation employed (military and economic/industrial—Selected Service…

Edward L. Ayers is the author of In the Presence of Mine Enemies, which is a book that takes a look at the American Civil War in new perspective. Ayer gives the reader an idea of what life during the Civil War was like. Instead of focusing deeply on the military aspects of the war, Ayers through his narrative was able to personify the Civil War through the characters in which he talked about. Because of his differing view of history, Ayers was able to identify the attitudes in the North and the South that change over time due to factors that were not in their control. Through the use of different perspectives of the Civil War, Ayers was able to demonstrate the challenges, beliefs and worries of all the people affected by the Civil War in a way that brought to light some unknown experiences of the war and the shifts in North and the South up to the battle of Gettysburg.…

The nine teenagers or “Little Rock Nine” as they are popularly known were enrolled in Little Rock Central High School only after initially being prevented from doing so by the National Guard sent out by the Governor of Arkansas. It wasn’t until President Eisenhower sent the 101st Airborne Division to escort them in that they were able to enter. President Eisenhower’s actions were not, as they may appear, in solidarity with the Civil Rights Movement. President Eisenhower took action because Governor Orval Faubus had deliberately attempted to defy a federal law. Therefore.…

In response, Eisenhower sent federal troops into Little Rock to protect the children from white rioters. In a telegram sent to the governor, Eisenhower denounced Faubus’ requests for federal cooperation and instead, pledged to uphold and defend the constitution. He writes that Faubus’ actions go against the orders of…

Certain aspects of different situations have been prevalent in society throughout history. These situations can be similar such as two that distinctly involve racism within school districts. They can also be situations that are different, but have similar aspects such as those involving the mentality of a crowd. Many times, in either case, the latter of the situations stems off the fact that over time, people have not learned from what they did many years prior.…
The widespread belief in their existence in the first months of 1862 helped drive the national narrative that began with the appearance of the first “contrabands” at Fortress Monroe in 1861, the First Confiscation Act in August of that same year, and through the preliminary announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in September 1862, that opened the door to enlistment of African American men in the Union army the following year. By August of 1863, Douglass would be making his case for equal pay for black soldiers to Secretary of War Stanton and to President Lincoln in person, within the walls of the White House itself.
