Gouldian Finches Essay

Part of the reason many people choose birds as their pets is because of their beautiful colors. Perhaps the most colorful species of birds are Gouldian finches. Another point in appearance, aside from being colorful, is that they are only about 5 inches in size.

There are three varieties for this particular species and they're divided according to color. There's the Red Headed Gouldian, the Black Headed Gouldian and the Yellow Headed Gouldian. As for telling which of the species is male or female, you just have to look at the brilliance of the color - males have more striking colors. Males also have longer central tail feathers.

At the very least, you need a cage with a great deal of space for them to fly around. The minimum would be a space of 2 foot by 2 foot by 2 foot. After taking care of that, you can go with any design for your bird cage.

The most common housing is made of metal but you can purchase a higher quality kind made of wood. Since finches are generally small birds, you need the bar space of the cage to be ½ inch at the most.

Seed is the primary food in Gouldian finches' diets. A good mix of seeds will be enough for nourishment but if you want to balance the diet of your pet, you can also provide the Gouldian finch with greens like watercress, lettuce or fresh spinach.

This variety of birds has a large tendency to get fat with overfeeding. But that is not enough reason not to give them a balanced diet by adding calcium through cuttlebone which you can buy from your local pet store.

The main threats to a Gouldian's health are egg binding and air sac mites. With egg binding, this is a problem that affects female Gouldian when they attempt to lay eggs. Eggs can get stuck in the birth canal and unable to pass through it. This will result in weakening of the bird and you need the immediate attention of a veterinarian for this

1a. Figure C 1b. The reason Figure C is the best histogram for birds that survived is because Bumpus had suggested that birds that were unusually large or small were unable to survive the winter due to a natural selection he called, stabilizing selection. According to Bumpus, stabilizing selection "winnows out of the extremes and favors those in the middle..", supporting that the there is a relationship between the size of the birds' traits and their survival. Many different animals develop different strategic foraging behaviours to survive the winter months. The black-capped chickadees (Parus atricapillus) are a songbird that can be observed throughout North America and remain year round even during the cold winters (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). During the winter the chickadees form an average flock size of about six to eight, but this number can vary (Templeton, Greene, & Davis, 2005, 1935). In the flock there is a social hierarchy and the dominant individual demonstrates certain behaviours such as vocalizing, bluffs threat, chasing, displacement or fighting to state its dominance (Barkan, 1990, p. 393, Hartzler, 1970, p. 429; Odum, 1942, p. 521). Dominance in a black-capped chickadee is observed when one individual known as a subordinate submits to the dominant individual that is perceived to be more prevailing in…

New Take on Tropical Songbirds’ Alternative Lifestyles A breakthrough study published on Friday in the journal Science uses life history theory to explain why tropical songbirds typically raise fewer chicks than temperate songbirds. SAN DIEGO >> U.S. researchers are launching studies on Mexico’s red-crowned parrot — a species that has been adapting so well to living in cities in California and Texas after escaping from the pet trade that the population may now rival that in its native country. The research comes amid debate over whether some of the birds flew across the border into Texas and should be listed under the Endangered Species Act. Parrots in U.S. urban areas are just starting to draw attention from scientists because of their intelligence, resourcefulness and ability to adapt. There is also a growing realization that the city dwellers may offer a population that could help save certain species from extinction.…
