Gotlieb Internship Reflection

In this essay, I am going to examine my tasks at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center, various things I learned, along with some challenges and opportunities I gained. I am also going to elaborate on how this internship changed my career goals. I performed a variety of tasks at the Howard Gotlieb Archival Research as an exhibition intern. At the start of my internship, I helped the archives finish the exhibit on Elie Wiesel. This mainly entailed making sure that everything looked presentable to the public--no crooked labels or material. At times, I would have to re-mat materials, because they were not taped properly. With my team of two on Mondays and Wednesdays, we then moved on to work on the Deborah Voigt exhibition. This was an …show more content…
Many of the clients were happy with the exhibits I helped put together. For instance, I had to the chance to meet the opera singer Deborah Voigt in person, when she came to give a talk at Boston University. I also was honored by the Theodore Roosevelt Society, as they gave me and my co-workers that worked on the Theodore Roosevelt exhibit a coffee mug that had a thank you note on the inside with a ceremonial dollar coin with Theodore Roosevelt's profile image on the back. This internship also gave me the opportunity to see and hold some many important materials. How many people can say that they have held Fred Astaire's shoes? Or even, how many people can say that they have held multiple keys to different cities in one day? Also, even though I did not enjoy over half of my time spent typing labels, I got the opportunity to see what the archives have in storage. We have some interesting documents from famous leaders and writers from all over the world like King Henry XIII, Marie de' Medici, and Henry David Thoreau. In regards to my major, I got to experience different art, and the correct processes in order to store said art. This is an invaluable skill for me in my future

I completed scanning and TMS Re-Entrying two more boxes that contained approximately fifty to seventy-five coins a piece. Needless to say, the Museum has a lot of these coins. When I left on Thursday, there were still six more boxes that no one had begun scanning. As a personal highlight of the internship, on Tuesday, I was able to oil an authentic 13th-century Japanese wakizashi (Samurai short sword) that was crafted by the legendary Japanese swordsman Masamune.…

I have always had a passion for history and storytelling since I was a child and decided in seventh grade world history class that I wanted to be an archaeologist, discovering ancient cultures and uncovering their secrets. I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…
