I had my first nightmare with the English language when I was in 6th grade. I remember clearly what occurred. It was a sunny day when my teacher uttered in the class” Rosia, can you please read the next reading passage for me?” I bite my tongue so hard until it bled. I was saying in my mind that I do not want to read. However, my teacher urges me to read the passage aloud. Finally, I decide to try reading the passage, but the way I spoke that day was nowhere near how Robin Roberts presents the news on Good Morning America. I spoke more like a French tourist visiting Times Square. While reading the work of literature, I notice that I was pronouncing “the” for the French words “de”. Indeed, the worst part was not even the way I was reading the passage, it was the undesired laughter that I was receiving from my peers.

This quote is acutely correct because language is more than reading, writing, and speaking. Language also come with the opportunity to know someone culture by putting yourself in their shoes. Language gives me a double life. I walk the street with a New Yorker accent. At home, I am back to being a Haitian girl that chat with family members in Haitian Creole or French. Sometimes, language can be confusing. Last week, my friend asks me a question I found myself responding to her in Haitian creole even though she is a native English speaker. I had to correct myself
