Good Morning America-Personal Narrative

I don’t even know how long we have been together. I have tried plenty of times to get rid of him, but he insisted on staying. I tried hiding in the dark but he is like the moon he follows every step that I made. In the morning, I attempted to leave through the front door, but the door would not open. It is like I am locked inside a cell.
I had my first nightmare with the English language when I was in 6th grade. I remember clearly what occurred. It was a sunny day when my teacher uttered in the class” Rosia, can you please read the next reading passage for me?” I bite my tongue so hard until it bled. I was saying in my mind that I do not want to read. However, my teacher urges me to read the passage aloud. Finally, I decide to try reading the passage, but the way I spoke that day was nowhere near how Robin Roberts presents the news on Good Morning America. I spoke more like a French tourist visiting Times Square. While reading the work of literature, I notice that I was pronouncing “the” for the French words “de”. Indeed, the worst part was not even the way I was reading the passage, it was the undesired laughter that I was receiving from my peers.

This quote is acutely correct because language is more than reading, writing, and speaking. Language also come with the opportunity to know someone culture by putting yourself in their shoes. Language gives me a double life. I walk the street with a New Yorker accent. At home, I am back to being a Haitian girl that chat with family members in Haitian Creole or French. Sometimes, language can be confusing. Last week, my friend asks me a question I found myself responding to her in Haitian creole even though she is a native English speaker. I had to correct myself

I come from a poor family. I never had brand-name shoes or video games, or even a Lisa Frank binder and stickers like my friends at school, but I always had plenty of food in the fridge at home. My family never went hungry in spite of the fact that we were raised by a single mother who made her living as a coffee shop waitress. I did not know, till I was a teenager, that my mom bought the majority of our groceries with food stamps. It never seemed odd to me that she went to the grocery store one time a month and stocked up on milk, sugar, lunchmeat, chicken legs, hamburger meat, and most importantly, coffee.…

I’ve known Ellen since first grade, and we became friends in fourth when we were on the same battle of the books team. However, we started to grow apart in eighth grade, as people usually do when growing up. We started hanging out less and less so I was surprised when she invited me to go watch a movie (I can’t remember which) with her, her mom, and her mom’s friend. My mom dropped me off at her house and then we drove to the movie theater. I was surprised (yet again) to find out that Ashley and Maya-two of Ellen’s friends- were meeting us at theater, normally I would have been fine with this since I wouldn’t have gone if I had known they were coming.…

Part A Task 1 I found the text “The day I became black” very interesting. The text is about Willem Reerink and how one day his life changed. The day when everyone found out that he was African American. I think that the interesting thing about this text is how his life changed, how people reacted to it and how differently they treated him, like he was a completely different person. Willem’s skin was not black, he just had a deep tan.…

Erik was administered an 11th grade level passage, “The Time Machine” by H.G. Wells, to read aloud in English. His pronunciations were extremely precise, since Erik presents no language disabilities. Only one term was mispronounced from the paragraph; “anachronism”; however, it was due to lack of exposure to the word. When the enunciation for the expression was modeled, he repeated with great articulation. It is evident the student received excellent foundations in areas of phonology and morphology, since his enunciations are above average for a bilingual.…

"Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,' 'just remember that all the people in this world haven't had the advantages that you've had'" (Fitzgerald 1). In the novel, The Great Gatsby, this quote is said by Nick's father. You should not judge others without having all the facts about them; because people come from different backgrounds and grow up in different cultures. This advice is good to follow because the evidence showing it is true can be seen in the world today through people's experiences and through what is portrayed in movies.…

Two white over stuffed arm chairs sat opposite to a sleek dark desk. On top of the desk sits a black mug with "The Late, Late, Late Show" written in a wide, yellow font. A young woman wearing a loose blue sweater and a headset over her ears rushes onto the stage to adjust a striped throw pillow that had been cast askew. The host, a man in his mid-forties known to the public as Bronson Peters, follows the steps that lead to the stage.
