In the midst of the Great Expedition and Abraham Lincoln elected president, Lord Tweedmouth from England, created the first line of Golden Retrievers by breeding a wavy-coated retriever and a now extinct, tweed water spaniel. The Golden Retriever was established as a well known wildfowling dog and devoted companion. Breed standards hold up to the dog having a broad skull, a resilient golden coat that feathers under the body, deep chested, and a muscular neck. This friendly and reliable breed has a eager to please attitude and high energy level, making a great companion for an active person/family. Making sure a Golden is regularly checked, groomed and takes in at least 990 calories a day with two meals, this breed is generally healthy and will live up to twelve years. Some diseases that this breed can have are elbow dysplasia and osteosarcoma.

It is similar to pediatric Osteosarcoma in humans. The tumor is most likely to occur in middle aged dogs or if it is located in the ribs it can affect younger dogs around four years of age. Golden retrievers are affected by this disease because of their size and weight. Osteosarcoma can develope in any bone but is primarily seen in the limbs more than half of the time. It grows in the bone and as it grows outwards the bone is slowly destroyed from the inside. The causes of this disease are unknown, but are usually seen in animals whom have experienced skeletal anomalies or non natural occurrences affecting the animals bones (bullets, ran over, etc…). If a dog has Osteosarcoma, the animal is likely showing symptoms of: irritability, loss of appetite, weight loss, lameness, and fatigue due to pain.
