Texas stands as a state today because of a back and forth battle between Mexico and the United States. In late 1844, Polk was elected President of the United States. He wanted to annex Texas and he also had his eyes on California. Congress finally voted to annex Texas before he took office. Polk was delighted. On May 9, 1846, Mexican soldiers fired upon Americans on the “Texas side” of the Rio Grande, the area claimed by the United States. That action gave President Polk a justification for going to war with Mexico. Should the United States have gone to War with Mexico? The Americans going to war was justified for several reasons: Americans were fired upon first by Mexico, Mexico’s government was too weak to effectively govern such a large territory, and President Polk believed in Manifest Destiny. One reason that America went to war with Mexico was that the Mexicans fired upon Americans across the Rio Grande. President James Polk says, “We have tried every effort at reconciliation. But now, .... Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil” (Doc B). President Polk tried to negotiate with Mexico but instead they invaded the United States and attacked us on our territory. This week’s readings discusses different aspects of the Mexican war. In “Mexican Views of the Mexican-American War discusses the origin of the war between Mexico and the United States, it states “To explain then in a few words the true origin of the war, it is to say that the insatiable ambition of the United States, favored by our weakness, caused it”, the weakness that it’s referring to is the Mexican government. Like we discussed on Thursday, Mexico has always had a chaotic government that contributed the loss of Mexican land. It can be lead to think that if Mexico had a secure government, the loss of the land wouldn’t have happened. Mariano Otero’s “Considerations Relating to the Political and Social Situation of the Mexican Republic in the Year 1847” relates to the previous reading because he explains the Mexican government and weak army contributed to the loss of…

In document A, John L. O’Sullivan stated that, “... Manifest Destiny to overspread the continent allotted by Providence (God) for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” This evidence shows the U.S. was justified in going to war with Mexico because the U.S.’s population increases every year, and they need more land to provide homes for the new families. A third reason the Mexican War was justified was because the Mexicans provoked America first. In document B, James Polk stated in his war message that, “... Mexico has passed the boundaries of the U.S., has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon the American soil.”…

Polk’s “War Message to Congress”, given in May of 1846. In his message Polk justified his need for a declaration of war against Mexico based on the alleged “…wrongs perpetrated by Mexico upon our citizens throughout a long period of years…” (p. 75). Specifically though, Polk thoroughly emphasized the event of Mexican’s shedding the blood of American citizens on American soil as the main reason for going to war. Polk was playing on Americans’ pride and nationalism as there have been very few times, if any, that the United States have allowed any attack on its citizens or the country in general to go unanswered, so why let a situation as severe as this go?…
