College is all everyone wants to talk about lately. Where are you going to school next year is asked on a daily basis. The obvious follow up is generally a question about what I am going to study. I have answered the questions enough times to have them memorized. The one question that has been tougher to answer; how are you going to pay for college. Man, how do I answer that one? I had a real summer job for the first time, but only made around two thousand dollars. College, when inexpensive, costs thousands of dollars a year. According to the College Board the average cost of tuition at an in-state university is 8,893 dollars for the 2013-2014 year. Hathaway is very achievable for me, my GPA is around 3.8 and my ACT score is a 28 which sets me up for the highest level of the scholarship. My interests, however, make me want to look to new horizons, mainly a new state. Along with all the questioning I have been receiving comes the paradigm that college is where you find out what you want to do with your life. I want to experience something new and challenging, and going to a college in a state where I have visited, but not lived would give me that experience. The challenge comes from the rise in tuition, where an in state school tuition jumps up in price by ten to forty thousand dollars a year. Some of the schools on my application list have been Montana State University in Bozeman, South Dakota School of Mine and Technology, and the University of Colorado in Boulder. The geographically inclined would realize that these are all around the edges of the fine state of Wyoming, due to the fact that while I love my home state, but I want to know what else there is in this amazing country. College is an expensive endeavor and is something that my family and I need to discus at length. The Hathaway scholarship has four levels biased on academic success. The higher my GPA is the higher level of reward I can receive. At the highest level I would receive over eight-thousand dollars towards a Wyoming college. This is full ride to most of the community colleges like Northwest in Powell or Sheridan College. At the University of Wyoming the Hathaway scholarship provides for half to more than half of the yearly tuition. My GPA is around 3.8 which is well about the 3.0 cutoff for the premier level of this scholarship. The financial aid I could be awarded from Montana State University, my first choice of the six schools I have applied to, can be up to ten thousand dollars a year. These funds would come from the Presidential Scholarship program offered by the college, which is based purely on academic ability. They take the score I received on my ACT test along with my current grade point average and the final grade point average I receive when this year ends. The score I received on my ACT was a twenty-eight. That was my composite score, while my math and science were thirty and thirty-one respectively. My English reading was a twenty-six while my grammar score came out to be a twenty-seven.
