Ancient Greece thrived between 800 B.C. and 500 B.C. which occured many years before the classical age. Acorrding to the History Channel during the Greeks Dark Age people lived in small farming areas with no rule. The villages started to grow and out of the ashes came the birth of the city-state or polis. The communities built walls and market places, organized their own governments, created their own constitution of sorts, and standardized armies and gathered taxes. All of the villages that had assembled a polis belived that their towns were safe gaurded by a certian god. Not one of the city-states where the same, but during the seventh centry B.C. , the dawn of the Archic period, many of the city-states had procured many of the same qualities. Most of the city-states had vanquished their kings and let a few affluent individuals rule. The city-states also had an agricutural based economy, which made land very valuable. According to the history Channel the Roman Empire grew from a tiny village on the Tiber River to a massive force that conquered many places such as Europe, western Asia, Africa, and the Mediterranean islands. According to the folklore of the time Rome was established by the sons of Mars, Romulus and Remus, who were left by the river and were resucued by a myhtlogical creature, a she-wolf, and had grow up to kill a king and make their village. Eventually Romulus would come to kill his brother and Rome would be named after their first king. After nearly 500 years Rome changed its government from democratic to being ruled by an emperor. This Emperors name was Augustus, and he ruled during a time of distruction and turned it into a beautiful time of peace. Augustus made many changes in social reforms and brought forth a new age for Roman writers, artist, and archeticts. After ruling for 56 years Augustus followers and the Senate, it was made up of people who they belived to be the offspring of the senate that ruled during the rule of Romoulus, moved Augustus up the ranks and made him a god. Many years after Christianity became Romes main religion an emperor named Julian tried to bring back the pagan and suceeded but after his death the pagan culture was and was never brought back by any other emperor.
