Origins of group (location founder etc.) – why have I chosen this group and reason for report
Gloriavale is a Christian group consisting of many tightknit families residing in a small community on the west coast of New Zealand. The members of this church have come from all over the world to practise the teachings of Jesus within this sheltered dwelling. The community is known, to not only provide their members with the salvation from Jesus, but also provides a place of work, education as well as housing. Knowing this can deepen our understanding of their belief and practices and can also demonstrate how, perhaps these have changed over time. These changes, or lack of, can indicate how traditional Gloriavale is or susceptible to change or influence the group is. This is significant as I believe that any faith and beliefs a Christian group has must be able to adapt, not necessarily change, to cope within and take advantage modern society. They enable the group to achieve such things as keeping out of debt, caring for one another through sharing abilities and baring each other burdens, as well as being able to provide for the large families that exist among the group. This provides the basis for a social environment which is believed by the members to ‘mirror life in heaven’.
I believe that these key principles, and what the group achieves through these principles, is an admirable goal in their ‘ideal’ life style. While not modern, these principles clearly represent many aspects of the bible. For example their principle, “do unto others as you would have them do to you”, is very similar to one of the ‘Golden rules’ in the bible, which is loosely worded as “treat people the way you want to be treated”. It is for this similarity to the Christian church, and many others seen within the community, that parallels between ‘normal’ faith and Gloriavale beliefs can be
