Scientific Proof Of Global Warming Habits

Great Essays
More and more citizens have global warming on their mind but continue to choose not do anything about it. Scientists find threating evidence of global warming and believe human activity and our choice of vehicles are to blame. We know one solution to help prevent global warming is driving ecofriendly cars and on the contrary, Christian Science Monitor blogger John Voelcker indicated over ninety-nine percent of consumers will remain interested in buying a traditional gas operated vehicle (Voelcker 2013) because they are more comfortable with their conventional automobile choices. This paper will attempt to examine the current lack of motivation for human to change their current driving habits. I intend to explore reasons why consumers ignore the evidence of global warming and the steps they can take to lessen their carbon footprint. I need to ask the following this central question: Are consumers aware of the direct consequences climate change has on their lives, what makes the 99% of people choose to stick to gas operated vehicles, and what can manufacture and markets do to increase ecofriendly car sales? According to scientist Bill Nye, the greenhouse gasses produced by humans using fossil fuels are getting stuck in the atmosphere. In his YouTube video with National Geographic called “Climate Change 101 with Bill Nye | National Geographic” he explains how greenhouse gasses are creating a blanket effect causing heat to get trapped in the atmosphere. Nye infers these trapped gasses are causing our earth to warm (Nye 2015). To find out if global warming is as evident as Nye inferred in his video, I needed to find scientific proof of global warming. …show more content…
I found an article by Brian Kahn titled “World 's Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Passes 400 PPM Threshold. Permanently” that provides scientific evidence of global warming. His article explains this September the carbon dioxide levels have set a record. He continues to explain how in the month of September, the levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide are at their lowest for the year. He adds this September, the level of atmospheric CO2 levels never dropped below 400 parts per million (ppm). Kahn states since the levels never dropped below 400 ppm during the lowest point of the year, scientists believe the level will never drop below ever again. He adds these new levels are causing scientists to predict this year as the hottest year on record. Kahn’s article provides scientific proof of global warming. Bill Nye also informs us about some of the effects of these high levels of CO2, one of those being ocean acidification. Nye states “Since the late 18th century, ocean surface acidification has increased by thirty percent”. Nye goes on to explain how such high levels of acid content in our oceans will lead species to become calcified. He continues to discuss how these species becoming calcified will create problems in the whole ocean food web. Nye explains one billion people are depending on the ocean for their main source of protein (Nye 2015). It is common for consumers to disregard this effect because the one billion people relying on the ocean for protein are typically from third world countries. Because of the different lifestyles of these countries, the population is not considered a consumer of ecofriendly cars. But this effect of global warming will impact ecofriendly car consumers in the future. If third world countries no longer have fish as a source of protein, perhaps consumers eating habits will change to adjust to the available protein sources. Not only …show more content…
I discovered this not the case. While reading Lydia Saad’s article titled “American concerns about global warming on the Rise” I observed a chart that corresponded to a Gallup poll conducted in 2013. This poll was done to determine how concerned Americans are about global warming. I concluded that 58% of Americas worry about global warming (Saad 2013). It doesn’t make sense why over 99% of consumers will continue to drive gas operated vehicles (Voelcker 2013) if 58% are concerned about global warming (Saad 2013). Sixty percent of consumers who are concerned with climate change are still not ready to buy an ecofriendly vehicle. Despite the benefits of ecofriendly cars, consumers continue to stick to their traditional gas operated vehicles. Next I will explore the reasons

I agree with the statement in the essay that says less than one percent isn’t worth the risk of disturbing the area. Alvin Toffler Analysis

According to Alvin Toffler, we Americans living in this century need to start redefining our basic notion of what it means to be literate. For the past century, the American standard was to be able to have basic reading and writing skills. However, the development of technology, globalization, and communication have raised our standards now to be able to learn, unlearn, and relearn, which is what Toffler is arguing for us to be able to handle as a necessity in this new era. Even though he did not state that directly in his quote, it is directly implied that is what he wants Americans to lean towards as a basic skill. However, Toffler is directly comparing the standards of the past to our standards of today, which I believe is a highly…

I think that Bill McKibben has constructed a well-crafted article supported with sound scientific evidence to back up his claims. As the title of the article implies, McKibben dives deep into three horrific numbers that prove severe climate change is just around the corner and somewhat impossible to stop now. The first number he discusses from the Copenhagen Accord is 2 C which is the agreed temperature that global warming should be below. But, as he describes in latter paragraphs, such a dramatic temperature increase would be much more devastating. The second number he talks about, 565 gigatons, describes the estimated amount of carbon monoxide that humans will release into the atmosphere and still has a chance at the average temperature still…

Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America is a book that pledges the importance of city planning and believes that the deliberate, methodical structure that we give to where we live will reflect back into how we live our lives. Jeff Speck, author of the book and esteemed city planner, claims that one of the most important features of city planning should be the city’s accessibility to pedestrians, a feature Speck sees as being largely and mistakenly ignored in today’s more car-focused era. He states that walkability will not only help us, the people living in these cities and towns, but also ultimately help the environment for the better. Speck makes abundantly clear of the importance of lifestyle changes in his book, but I believe there…

Everyone is familiar with pollution and greenhouse gasses. They understand that our vehicles pollute, and it is not helping our environment. Our citizens’ march in the street for change and oil companies take the majority of the blame. The bottom line is everyone wants less pollution; however, the reality is that we choose because of convenience. We choose the convenience of driving our own cars, instead of taking the bus to work.…

The first thing indicating global warming, is that it’s actually getting warmer. Scientists from NORA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) have stated that: For most of the past 10,000 years, global average temperature has remained relatively stable and low compared to earlier hothouse conditions in our planet 's history. Now, temperature is among the highest experienced not only in the “recent” past—the past 11,000 years or so, during which modern human civilization developed—but also probably for a much longer period. (Scott, “What’s the hottest Earth has been…

An investigation was done in the areas of types of benefits suggested by many consumer trends, and the future of hybrid technology. A focus group of people who in recent times bought cars, both hybrids and non-hybrids, revealed what consumers look for in their cars. Study of the needs of hybrid technology helped determine how feasible widespread change to hybrids would be in the future. With all the information taken into account, I concluded that hybrids have several issues that offset their fuel efficiency. Their higher cost both turns consumers away and makes the vehicles a less attractive economic investment.…

Global Warming If you ever wanted to see polar bears in the wild, your time is running out. Global warming is causing polar bears, and many other species to go extinct. Global warming, also known as climate change, is the rising of the Earth’s temperature due to greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide, getting trapped in the atmosphere. When the gases can not leave the atmosphere, they absorb radiation and sunlight from the sun and make the atmosphere warmer.…

Measuring progress in the combat against climate change is only possible if the targets are quantifiable. For SDG13, there are easily quantifiable targets such as 13.1: Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries and 13.a: Implement the commitment undertaken by developed-country parties to the UNFCC to a goal of mobilizing jointly $100 billion annually by 2020[...]. There are also targets that are harder to measure such as 13.3: Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change[...] and 13.b Promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management in LDCs including focusing on women[...]. Finally,…

While the increasing world population stimulates an increase in demand for resources, human activities have been changing the makeup of the atmosphere, damaging the environment which provides those resources. Common practices such as burning fossil fuels and removing forests have released unprecedented amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, resulting in a worldwide increase in temperatures referred to as climate change. This increase in heat alters water cycles, effecting significant changes in the availability of fresh water. In addition, abnormal temperatures can disrupt the variety of plants and animals in ecosystems as well as weaken agricultural productivity. As a catalyst for climate change, overpopulation contributes to this increase…
