The epic of Gilgamesh is about the story of the king and hero Gilgamesh who had a long journey to find a secret for immortality. However, one of the main themes in the story is the friendship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu. The two men at the beginning they were enemies, but at the end of the story they become a friend. Their friendship was very strong as it can be seen when Enkidu dies Gilgamesh was in the great sorrow, and he tried hard to bring back Enkidu to life by offering the gifts to the gods. Gilgamesh was suffering from the lack of control his power. This can be shown when he raped wives and daughters of nobles of Uruk whatever he desire it. So to bring back the balance to City the god Anu called out: "Aruru, you are the one who created humans. Now go and create a double for Gilgamesh, his second self, a man who equals his strength and courage, a man who equals his stormy heart. Create a new hero; let them balance each other perfectly, so that Uruk has peace."( Stephen) Enkidu was created and sent to the wildness, when he heard about the Gilgamesh's violent. Before Gilgamesh becomes a friend with Enkidu he was very selfish and obsessed with his power. However the friendship between them changes the personality characteristic of Gilgamesh form a selfish and harsh to care about others. Also, calm down him down from his anger and violent. This can be seen when Enkidu dies Gilgamesh said to him "Beloved, wait, don't leave me. Dearest of men, don't die, don't let them take you from me."(Stephen) For Enkidu the friendship was the main reason for his death because of the rush actions' of Gilgamesh like killing the monster Humbaba and The bull of heaven the gods cursed him and he dies. Eventually for the people of Uruk their friendship had a bad effect and good effect on them. The bad effect was the famine and the attack by the bull of heaven to Uruk. This was the consequences of Enkidu and Gilgamesh’s actions. However the good effect is that Gilgamesh is no longer raped or hurt anyone in the Uruk after the friendship was established.
Finally, the story shows that Friendship is one of the most important things in the life, and everyone needs a friend during his or her life. Even the great king like Gilgamesh need's a friend to support him and made him a better individual in life.
