The small market town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, with a population of 2,400, recently hosted the latest battle of the Civil War. This battle was fought July 1-3, 1863. The Battle of Gettysburg is thought of as the most important clash of the Civil War. The Confederate’s casualties totalled to 28,000 out of 75,000 and the Union’s casualties totalled to 23,000/88,000. 160,000 people were involved. In Rappahannock, 866 Federals were killed and 523 Confederates killed with thousands of rebel casualties. The first day of the battle was July 1. General Robert E. Lee of the Confederates fought between General George G. Meade’s Union Army of the Potomac. The next day, July 2, the Confederates attacked the Federals. Lee had plans to cross the Wrightsville Bridge and gain access to more of the Northern areas. The Union was oblivious to his plan, however, he was still prevented from coming across the bridge across the Susquehanna. This bridge is important because it connects Wrightsville and Columbia. Lee’s army proceeded to invade Gettysburg. Lee suffered from miscommunication with his generals and the strength of the Union was able to protect their territory by burning the Wrightsville-Columbia Bridge. A daring and bold move from the Union, it was a risk, but ended up beneficial to the Union. The Confederates were not able to cross and ended up retreating slightly back into the South. Proving to be a major turning point for the war, this aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg has made a massive impact on the outcome and our amount of hope for the Union. As our hope for victory rises, we will reserve a special place in our history for the bridge that was sacrificed for possibly the win of this war.
