When taking the class Foundations of Human Behavior I did not realize how much this class would become an integral part of the skills I am learning. In my key experience I was able to watch human behavior on many different levels. I was able to get an intimate look at how behaviors affect the client's and relationships with those around her. I believe that this client is resting in Erikson's Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt stage of development. She has struggled with feeling of inadequacy as well as low self esteem.…

shows the individual we are confident, calm, genuine, understanding, and respectful. If we accomplish this we can gain the trust of the client. We also need to admit to your own mistakes if necessary. Just because you are a great “talker” does not mean you will automatically be good at verbal de-escalation. On the other hand I have worked with plenty of people who did not talk much at all, but were great at verbal de-escalation.…

Gestalt therapy facilitates individuals who are stuck at an inner polarity. The human experience can exist on what is referred to as a continuum with polar opposites; for example, sad/happy, humility/arrogance or passive/aggressive. Gestalt therapy aids in finding balance in this polarities (Zimberoff, 2003). A Gestalt therapist would probably listens to a narrative of the past, but the therapist will focus on expression, tone of voice, breath, silence and pace of speech, body moments and sensations. All these carry equal weight.…

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and Gestalt Therapy: Similarities As Yontef and Jacobs (2011) note, initially, it was fairly simple to compare Gestalt to other systems of therapy, largely due to the fact that Gestalt could clearly distinguish itself as the system that upheld existential and humanistic characteristics. Over time, however, the distinction between the fields has become more and more narrow. Following are the similarities between Gestalt boundary differences and psychodynamic defence mechanisms: Both theoretical approaches mention projection as a defence mechanism or boundary difference that they seek to address. The psychodynamic approach describes projection as “unacceptable impulses or feelings of his own to another person (or agency)”…

What I learned in this course In this course, I completed reading the text Theory and Practice of Counseling and Psychotherapy written by Gerald Corey, which helped me have a better understanding of different types of theories and how they can benefit or help potential clients I may have. From all the theories studied in this course, there are some theories that I would like to apply that would be beneficial in helping me guide my clients to the right path. Person-centered therapy: In this therapy, Carl Roger recommended that the client would have the best help if the therapist motivates the client to concentrate on the problem then on the interpretation that others have on the situation.…

When compared to other therapeutic approaches, gestalt therapy is a lot less structured and much more philosophical. Perls (1969) has been quoted saying ‘One of the objections I have against anyone calling himself a gestalt therapist is that he uses a technique, a technique is a gimmick’ This being said gestalt therapists are encouraged to create their own means of assisting the client towards experiencing awareness and meaningful contact with the self and others. One of the exercises that may be used for a client in gestalt therapy is the exaggeration exercise. The aim in this exercise is for the client is to become more aware of the subtle cues and signals they are sending through their own body language. The person is asked to exaggerate…
