Today, both individual and group counselling therapies are commonly being used around the world to treat and prevent psychological problems. Although individual counselling is still commonly used worldwide, limiting the delivery of services is no longer practical. Group counselling on the other hand has more to offer in terms of getting to work with more clients at one go which in return is an advantage in financial tight times. Also, it may very well be a choice of treatment in today’s generation, and if it is to be effective, creativity must be in place when delivering these theories in practice (Corey, G, 2000, pg. 3).

The empty-chair technique is one way of getting the client to express how they really feel about a certain situation. Utilizing two chairs, the therapist and the member would sit in between the empty chair. With that in place, the therapist would then ask the member to invite the other part of him which he wants to talk about to join them on the empty chair. In doing so, this would help the member increase their sense of awareness to the feelings that has been suppressed for quite some time (Masson, Jacobs, Harvill, Schimmel, 2012, pg. 370).
Lastly, one of the limitations in gestalt therapy is that often in gestalt intervention, the leader would tend to focus more on the feelings when a participant’s emotions is being brought out, giving the cognitive factor less attention. In psychoanalytic theory, behavior is caused by the unconscious motivation which becomes clear in the transference relationship. Analyzing the transference, the repression is lifted and the unconscious will be conscious. In gestalt therapy, it teaches the client to fully use their senses so that he can be self-responsible and self-supportive. In return, it will help the client regain awareness and also the process of awareness. The psychoanalyst can only use interpretation, whereas, the gestalt therapist may use any techniques as long as they are aiming towards increasing awareness and are within the guidelines of ethical
