Gerald Graff And Cathy Birkberg's Speech

Improved Essays
Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein had gone to an academic conference about a speaker talking about a sociologist known as Dr. X. The speaker had a lot of knowledge about Dr. X, he referred to many books and articles about Dr. X quoting long passages. But, the audience was confused as to why the speaker kept ranting on about the same thing and not until the end did it all make sense when a audience member asked a question. The speaker was prepared but was not clear to the audience confusing them for the entire speech. In Glenn Loury’s speech, “Is He One of Us? Reflections on Identity and Authenticity” (pp. 489-493), he delivers the 245th Opening Convocation to the students of Brown University. Loury addresses diversity, what role it plays, and the advantages it can bring to people’s lives. His supporting statements are puzzling and his justification falls short of being a well thought-out speech, as one might expect at an Opening Convocation. As his speech progresses, his direction becomes unclear with each new point he brings up.…

Rhetorical constraints are defined by Lloyd Bitzer as “made up of persons, events, objects, and relations which are part of the situation because they have the power to constrain decisions or action.” (Bitzer, 1968) Constraints in this situation can include: beliefs, attitudes, traditions, interest, likes and dislikes of the audience. For example if an audience member had a previous interaction with the speaker or has a preconceived opinion on the speaker this may be a constraint. These constraints are considered obstacles the speaker must overcome in the quest for a successful response to the rhetorical situation. The parts of the rhetorical situation are key in the speech writing process and knowledge of the rhetorical situation can determine whether a speech is eloquent or fitting.…

As society grows, technology grows with it. Technology has been around for many years and advances at the same rate, if not faster, than humans. It is remarkable how much technology has developed, yet it is also terrifying. We, as humans, rely on our technology to entertain us, to speak for us, and even to think for us. In Paul Barnwell’s article, “My Students Don’t Know How to Have a Conversation,” he effectively uses rhetorical strategies through the use of imagery, relating to the readers, and using his credibility as a teacher to convey to his readers that students rely heavily on technology to a point where they cannot communicate to another human being without using their screens as a crutch.…
