Authors usually describe his or her characters to give voice to each one of them. George Lalor describes the characters in the novelette Old Woman Island in able for the characters to take form in the story. He described Orlie Chubb as “A tall kid...as tall as Timothy...but skinny.” (31) Not only he describe them in physical appearances, but also, he described them in actions & thoughts. He is not just a tall skinny kid, but he is also described as a brave and ambitious kid: “Someday, i’m gonna be a pilot an’ fly right ‘cross there.” (32). As for my reaction to Orlie, I am surprised that a boy who steal stuff like him has a big ambition in life. He proved that even though he’s just a poor boy he has huge dreams for himself.
