George Pelecanos’s The Turnaround Analysis
George Pelecanos is a native of Washington, D.C. and a best -selling author of eighteen novels. Pelecanos is also known for the HBO series The Wire and received an Emmy nomination as a writer and producer for the series.
The Turnaround takes place in July 1972 in a neighborhood called Heathrow Heights. Heathrow is an all-black community with people who are proud of their history. The story is about a violent racial act that happens thirty-five years ago at Heathrow that has the individuals involved reliving the incident. The Turnaround tells of tragedy with the loss of loved ones and the understanding of how to find peace in a time of war. Growing relationships with fathers and sons. James wanted to pay back his mom and dad. James had dreams that one day he would own a mechanic shop with the family name. Alex never wanted to work at the dinner but, felt he was obligated to keep it open and in the family. A photograph of John Pappas cooking hamburger patties smiling was a reminder for Alex to pass it on to his son Johnny who had a passion for the dinner. The beginning of the story Raymond reaches out to Alex for closure. The ending Alex reaches out to James and Raymond. Alex offers the opportunity to James that he misses because of the act to own a shop and fulfill his dreams and start fresh. Alex plans to send James to school to learn the new cars.
