Joplin was born somewhere between Texas and Arkansas in the late 1860’s (A&E Television Networks 2015). His mother sang and played the banjo and his father was a violinist (A&E Television Networks 2015). Joplin learned how to play the piano from teacher, Julius Weiss (A&E Television Networks 2015). He settled in Missouri and got a band together (A&E Television Networks 2015). They played Please Say You Will and A Picture of Her Face, which were both waltzes, and the Chicago World Fair in 1893 (A&E Television Networks 2015). Maple Leaf Rag, the most famous ragtime song, was written by Joplin in 1899 (A&E Television Networks 2015). He would later publish many more songs, including The Entertainer, another famous song written by him. Joplin died on April 1st, 1917 (A&E Television Networks 2015). Ragtime is a syncopated musical style that was very popular from the 1890’s to the 1920’s ("History of Ragtime" 2006).
