The major theme of Section one, Units one and two, articles 1-15, in Geography by Gerald R. Pitzl, is how the discipline of Geography is so widely-themed, with the examples of the destruction of rainforests, desertification, and pollution featured in Unit two. Before studying this book, I never thought of pollution or how humans can damage our global environment being a topic a Geographer studied. I thought that Geography was based on maps and the land. The importance of humans and the way we interact with our environment is a huge part of the discipline of Geography. The immenseness of the field of Geography and the way humans interact with the world’s physical features is the theme I carried from these Units.

I agree that we should rediscover the importance of geography, just as Article 2 “Rediscovering the Importance of Geography” discusses. In the article, it says that humans are struggling with understanding their place and that because of this, the discipline of geography is becoming less important, even though it is studied more in high schools and colleges. (Pitzl 11) In the Canadian Geographic, it states 10 reasons why people should study geography. Several of the reasons made me understand and agree that we should rediscover the importance of geography and teach our children about this discipline. The one that struck me as the most important reason to not let geography slip from our minds was that humans need “to appreciate Earth as the homeland of humankind and provide insight for wise management decisions about how the planet’s resources should be used.” (Top 10 Reasons…) The physical layout of the Earth in combination with the people in it makes geography absolutely necessary …show more content…
(Pitzl 48) We thought that the rising of the ocean temperatures would slowly threaten the bodies of water, but now scientists are learning that the rise in temperatures is more detrimental than we thought. (Sea Temperature Rise) Global warming because of humans effects the ocean and the wildlife in the oceans, especially the coral reef. “Other organisms affected by temperature change include krill, an extremely important link at the base of the food chain. Research has shown that krill reproduce in significantly smaller numbers when ocean temperatures rise.” (Sea Temperature Rise) Not only are animals and plant life in the oceans at risk, but beach/coastal properties and people’s lives! “High tides and storm surges riding on ever-higher seas are more dangerous to people and coastal infrastructure.” (Global Warming…) These high tides are caused by shrinking mountain glaciers/ice, which causes warmer temperatures, which leads to global warming, which is caused by human activities. This is only an opinion, and I know many disagree and say that global warming is a natural thing, but as far as
