The literary form and genre of the book of Genesis is prose: biblical and historical narrative. Biblical narratives in Genesis show that “God is active in His world” and these narratives typically “chose certain events to reveal God.” For instance, this element is apparent when the Angel of the Lord speaks to Hagar, granting her the promise of descendants (Gen 16:10). In the same manner, this element is reinforced in subsequent chapters (Gen 17:19; 18:10). In describing this book, it is significant to note that most of the characters in the narrative are flawed.…

Lyn M. Bechtel discusses Genesis 34, which is a controversial verse in the Bible because it might involve rape. Genesis 34 tells a story of two young people, Dinah and Shechem, in which Shechem has sexual intercourse with Dinah and it is perceived by biblical scholars and other readers to be non consensual, therefore, classified as rape. The girl, Dinah, is Jacob's daughter, who is unmarried and not bonded to any other at time time of intercourse. Many scholars believe that the intercourse between Dinah and Shechem was forced upon Dinah. Bechtel argues that Dinah was not raped in the modern sense of the word, which is classified “as a man’s forcible, aggressive sexual intercourse with a women.”…

The article that I have chosen is the story about Joseph from the Bible’s Book of Genesis and King Esarhaddon of Assyria, who ruled Western Asia from 680-669 BCE. This article analyze and compare the parallel between both important figures. According to the Bible's Book of Genesis, Joseph was the younger son of Jacob. He had ten elder brothers who were envious of him since Joseph was Jacob’s favorite son with his second wife, Rachel. There was a plot against Joseph in which his half-brothers decided to throw him in a pit and tell their father, Jacob, that Joseph was dead.…

Reading Genesis chapters 1:1 – 2:3 I was amazed to find out that earth wasn’t something that was already in existence, but that earth was something created by Someone who was already in existence. The first chapter of Genesis starts off in verse one saying “In the beginning God” implying that he was there before all things. God is not only a master in creating but I learned in this narrative that he is also a master in designing. What really strikes me is that I am able to recognize one of God’s attributes which is that he is omnipotent. He has power over nature.…

Class, I believe that the characterization in Genesis 1-3 are accurate of our human nature. I actually think it is beautiful to see the way that from the beginning God gave us free will, and that free will still remains the same today, but we have recieved an advocate, Jesus. Being fully human and prone to sin, instead of having to fear what my sin could do to my relationship with God I can turn back to Him and be fully accepted just as I am. Adam and Eve were no different than we are in the sence that they had free will, and they chose to turn away from God and sin.…

In over 200 cultures, there are stories of a great ancient flood - the most familiar (in the Western community) being of Noah in the book of Genesis. As the story goes, God told Noah to build a massive wooden boat and load a male and female of every animal species into it. Then God flooded the earth by making it rain for 40 days and 40 nights, wiping away the wicked. Dealing with the flood story(-ies), there are some subjects that creationists fail to shine light upon - how was Noah and his sons able to construct a boat in which size and purpose require knowledge in fields that weren’t used until thousands of years later? How were the animals brought upon the ark if most were either extinct or unable to where Noah was?…

Appearing in late 1800AD, Panbabylonism was developed by several European scholars and historians such as Friedrich Delitzsch, Fritz Hommel, Eduard Stucken, Hugo Winckler, Peter Jensen, Felix Peiser, Heinrich Zimmern, Alfred Jeremias and Ferdinand Bork that many of the stories from the Old Testament specifically the Book of Genesis originated from the religion, mythology and history of the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians and Assyrians who lived in the Mesopotamia Valley from 5500BC to 220AD. Specifically, it was the Assyrians and the Babylonians who used their political and cultural influences to control a young nation of Israelites by making first the Kingdom of Israel and then later the Kingdom of Judah a vassal nation under the rule…

Introduction Genesis 1:1-2 has been interpreted in many different ways, which leads to different views concerning the creation account. One such view is called the gap theory. This view postulates that there was a significant amount of time (eons) between Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. The reason for the time gap is that Satan rebelled against God, and after that period of time, God had to recreate the universe.…
