Week 2, Journal 1: Genesis 12:1-9
The chosen passage begins with God calling Abram and Sarai, who were later called (Abraham and Sarah) to leave Haram, their home country to become the parents of a new generation and new country. God’s message to Abraham, “Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will show thee” (Genesis 12:1) preceded seven blessings as listed in verse three (3). Some of the blessings included “I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing.” In addition, the greatest of all blessings, the guarantee, which superseded all the blessings, was that of his lineage, the Savior and Redeemer of the world should

Hebrews 11: 8 states, “By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went”. Abram's absolute obedience to God is the kind of faith that God requires from each man and woman. A practical application is that individuals need to rely upon the divine promise, without the least outward assurance of its fulfillment, to “seek first the kingdom of God and other things will be added”. Like Abram, who could not explain the leadings of God; individuals might not realized their expectations, but need to hold fast to God’s …show more content…
His obedience to God secured him the Grace of God. By acknowledging the presence of God at all times, Joseph could say, “How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” (Genesis 39: 9). This was Joseph’s response to Potiphar’s wife who desired to commit adultery with him. Joseph’s faith in God helped him to resist the temptation of Satan. The Bible says, “ Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” (James 4:8), “Submit yourselves, then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4: 7). Indeed, Joseph submitted to God, resisted the devil, and he was successful. Due to the grace that was bestowed upon Joseph, he was allowed to leave the Egyptian prison and became the prime minister of the country, “prison to palace”. Lessons learned from Joseph’s examples are applicable to everyone today. We all need to understand that by trusting God, He will see us through our trials and tribulations. God is in the midst of all

Chiastic structure is a literary technique where the first set of ideas are reiterated by the second set of ideas but in reverse order, divided by the central idea. The median point may be used to identify a leading or main idea and generally contains the most important part of the structure because it is the emphasis of the passage. Because of the symmetrical structure, any break within the pattern, in this case the middle point, is distinguishable along the writing and holds implications of a deeper meaning. The chiastic structure of the narrative of Joseph in Genesis, chapters 37 to 50, shows a parallel storyline that peaks at an idea that is not explicitly said but instead revealed, that God is faithful in his promise to Abraham's descendants by continuing to fulfill this promise through Joseph and his story. Throughout Genesis 37-50, the story of Joseph is unfolded.…

This is evidenced by Joseph’s quickness to defend God, even in unnecessary situations. Consequently, so much as an innocent comment in the presence of Joseph can quickly be interpreted as a call upon the Devil, made evident when he says that “you were calling upon the Devil to give you another hand!” when in reality, David, the…

In Genesis 50:15-21, Joseph’s narrative reaches its climactic point with the clear picture of the fulfillment of the dream as traced back in Genesis 37. The dream motif in Joseph’s narrative is key as it provides a vehicle through which God’s purpose is revealed . It shows how God’s hand was behind the scenes pulling the strings causing the events in Joseph’s life with the intention that through him, His blessings upon the survival of Israel and many others is realized. This is brought out clearly in 50:20,“you meant it for evil (but) God meant it for good”. A clear demonstration that when evil confronts the purposes of God, it succumbs.…

In the book of Galatians, Paul identifies particular gifts the believer receives from the Holy Spirit upon surrendering their life to God. Paul describes these gifts as fruit in the life of the believer, refined through a continual walk with God. Faithfulness is one of these gifts. Believing God to resolve problems is a common misconception of faith. Faithfulness is not merely following God to seek out answers, to solve problems, or find a magic solution.…

The novel A Father who Keeps His Promises: God's Covenant Love in Scripture by Scott Hahn highlights the significant events in Scripture. Hahn starts with a story of a father in Armenia digging through the rubble of a collapsed school to save his son. When his son is found alive, he states that his father would never forget him. God is similar to the father, as he always saved humans from destruction and kept his promises. Hahn reveals that in Genesis 1 God created the world in six days, and the seventh for Sabbath.…

In three of these speeches (nos. II, IV, V), the focus is on God’s commitment to bless. In the remaining two (nos. I, III), the focus is on God’s expectations of Abraham. The major speech by God to Abraham about Abraham’s need to take appropriate action (vv. 9-14) is ringed by speeches of God’s promises to Abraham (vv. 3-8 and 15-21), showing that the demands of God must be interpreted within the context of the promises of God.”…

Abraham Abraham is considered to be one of the first Biblical Patriarchs that began the rise of Christianity. He is also considered an important figure in Judaism- often referred to as the Father of the Jewish people- and the Islamic Faith- often called Father of the Arabs. As the classic children’s song goes, “Father Abraham, had many sons, many sons had Father Abraham, I am one of them, and so you,”it refers back to when God promised that he would make Abraham into a great nation and he would have offspring as numerous as the stars. Christians, Muslims and Jew are considered offspring of Abraham. In Biblical scripture, Abraham faces many tests of faith and is used as a model of belief and loyalty to God.…

The fact that God is Love is still the most important fact for our day, and is the underlying factor that I believe can link theological, historical, and scriptural perspectives. It is the intersection in which mutual understanding an take place as we discuss an important principle established in Community of Christ Enduring Principles, the Worth of All Persons. Establishing the awareness and value of all persons has been a constant value pursued by the Restoration, Reorganization, and the Era of Community. As I explored the transformation of this principle, I believe it is a consistent influence in the journey of our heritage. The history of the faith movement includes a young man entering a grove, seeking to find God’s will for his life.…
