1) What were your beliefs on psychology growing up?
When my friend was growing up, people did not talk about mental problems even within families. She had family members who suffered from mental illnesses such as depression, but they called them “black moods” rather than depression, and she did not know of their illnesses till later in life. Mental illnesses were truly a taboo when she was young even in regards to anxiety or depression.

The text describes this school of psychological thought by saying, “Cognitive psychology sees humans not as passive recipients who are pushed and pulled by environmental forces but as active participants who seek out experiences, who alter and shape those experiences, and who use mental processes to transform information in the course of their own cognitive development” (Wood, Wood, & Boyd, 2014). When explaining the differences between the schools of thought, Mastering the World of Psychology compares how each perspective looks at a student who is struggling in school. When considering cognitive psychology, the text said that the student being observed was struggling in school because he was not putting proper study processes/methods into practice (Wood, Wood, & Boyd, 2014). In other words, if the student were to apply proper study habits, he could succeed.
