Social workers should obtain education about and seek to understand the nature of social diversity and oppression with respect to race, ethnicity, national origin, color, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, political belief, religion, and mental or physical disability, Code of Ethics of The National Association of Social Workers (2008). It is also important to remain professional regardless of the stressful situation one may be facing; the client is looking to the professional to maintain a certain demeanor and behavior in order to become comfortable enough to discuss personal matters. Although generalist practitioners are considered to be entry-level social workers, they are also learning on a case-by-case experience and must remain open to criticism as a form of education. There are certain professional boundaries that must never be crossed, social workers must remember that once the individual is a client regardless if ten years pass that individual is still considered a
