Motivation And Emotion In Yerkes-Dodson Law

Decent Essays
The topic that I have found interesting throughout the course of general psychology class would have to be from chapter 9 Motivation and emotion on the topic of Yerkes-Dodson Law. The reason that I have found this particular topic interesting is because it is a good explanation to why I feel sleepy during some of my classes. By learning about Yerkes-Dodson Law I have found that it provides ways of optimizing my arousal levels so that I’m more alert during class or other areas of my life. The idea that I have the ability to regulate my arousal provoked my curiosity and I wanted to learn more of how my heart rate (arousal) affects my behavior.

For example, if I were to take a communication class and I had a friend that is having trouble staying calm because it is their first time speaking in front of people, I would use the techniques that I learned from the Yerkes-Dodson Law. First I will have my friend become aware of their body by having them purposely tighten up their muscles in their body. I would ask my friend to start to make a tight fist and have them work with flexing the different muscles in their body. As a result of tightening their body, the tense body would become more relax causing my friend to lower his heart rate. In addition to attempting to lower their heart rate to a lower and more optimal level or arousal, I would then go over the material with my friend and do some rehearsal. As a last bit of advice I would recommend from my friend to restrict negative thoughts during the presentation just in case he starts to have anxiety while he is talking in front of the

Psychology 201 has been a very intriguing course for me so far. I really enjoyed learning about how the brain works and how big of a role it plays in our lives. Some specific areas of psychology I enjoyed studying were Operant Conditioning, the theories of motivation, and Jean-Dominique Bauby. Operant Conditioning was a familiar concept, even though I was not familiar with the specific terminology. I think reinforcement and punishment are very interesting topics that apply to everyone's lives.…

I choose the article “Hidden Epidemic: Tapeworms Living Inside People’s Brains” by Carl Zimmer. I picked this particular article because I thought it was interesting to learn about the effects tapeworms can have on a person’s brain and the things tapeworms can cause that people do not usually hear about. This relates to the class because we talked about tapeworms and their effects on humans. We also talked about how people get them and how long they can stay in the body.…

This letter may come as a surprise to you since it is being sent out so early, but Easter is drawing near and the class thought that it would be good to write our buddies before the Holiday. Although since we are also sending out an Easter card to accompany these letters, they may be a little shorter than usual. Anyways, I hope this letter finds you good health, even though we were recently made aware that you were feeling a little under the weather. As you may have remembered, the last time I wrote you I mentioned an event by the name of careers and manners. Although I feel that I did an adequate job on the group project one of the most important skills that I desperately need to improve on is learning to present in front of an audience. We had two assignments this semester that revolved around speaking in front of our class, the first being a speech by ourselves and the second being the group presentation. I am a cheerleader, so being in front of crowds does not bother me but what makes me the most nervous is when I have to speak in front of others by reading something I have written or completed. In the group presentation I was not as nervous since I was not alone in speaking to the class, but on the speech I did I was overcome with anxiety. Being able to talk in front of others is my biggest setback, but I am certain that with enough practice, patience, and preparation I will be able to calmly give a speech over any subject that I am required to do.…

We need more practice and more willing to put what we have learned in the past into practice. I know that during our college careers, we have heard from different people about what we should do when we are giving a presentation, but it looks like we did not take it seriously and now we are facing the consequences of giving a presentation like a high school student and not as an almost professional…
