In the reading Motyl breaks these cues with social and environmental cues that influence how individuals identify as themselves as well as a collective. Another factor of the negative consequences of being in communities that have similar views is a sense of naïve realism. This is when people believe that their view objective and others have the same view (Motyl, 2016). This is inaccurate because everyone has different experience in life which shapes how they view the world around…
In a social experiment conducted by Solomon Asch of 1951, Asch studied the impact of how social pressure from the majority can affect a person to conform (McLeod). The experiment consisted of one participant in a group of actors and all were asked to match the test line to a line most similar. In revealing their answers, the participant was asked to answer last out of the group while the actors all purposely answered incorrectly. With over 12 trials of the experiment, nearly 75% of the participants conformed to answering the question incorrectly at least once. This trend of conformity is also seen in today’s social influence.…
With this conflict of persuasion of a group's thoughts on a subject to one’s own there can be multiple implications to how the actions of the self-community can alter to the group community which can lead to a change that the self-community wouldn’t have made if not presented with a feeling of wrong by having a differing…
It only takes a few people to negatively influence an entire group, and most people will begin to follow the crowd in order to fit…
Groups, crowds, and teams can have an effect on ones behavior. Groupthink is defined as a kind of thinking in which maintaining group cohesive-ness and solidarity is more important than considering the facts in a realistic manner (Aronson, E., Wilson, T.D., & Akert, R.M. ,2013).Group polarization is defined as The tendency for groups to make decisions that are more extreme than the initial inclinations of its members (Aronson, E., Wilson, T.D., & Akert, R.M. (2013). For example lets there was a small isolated school and people want to believe that they had the best football team and they had the best players. Eventually everyone collectively starts to believe that they’re the best football team and they may make the mistake of challenging…
Doris Lessing’s “Group Minds” goes into depth about a human’s instinct to act and think based on a group environment, and that it can be changed if the tendency of group mentality is known at an early age. “The Perils of Obedience”, written by Stanley Milgram makes points that prove that the habit of following the group is not so easily broken. Milgram mentions that a humans desire to please an authority figure is so high that they are willing to do almost anything. Humans acting as sheep is a theory that very accuratetly represents the mindless following that many take in order to fit in. Lessing presents an eye opening, yet practically unachievable vision into the idea of breaking group mentality.…
This paper examines four current sociological phenomena and their resulting theories, offering possible explanations for the increasing problem of minority abuse by law enforcement. Although there are many other factors I have chosen to focus on racism (ACLU, 2015), militarization of the police force, (Jenkins, 2014) the hiring of veterans by law enforcement agencies (Jenkins, 2014) and a sociological phenomenon known as “the other” (Franzoi, 2012). Two of these seem to play a larger part in the problem as the other two forces are not recent developments and therefore less likely to be causative of a more recent issue.…
The emergent norm theory “rejects the premise that individuals become irrational in crowd situations due to the invasive power of irrationality” (Davetian). They focus, however, on the conditions that bring about collective behaviour, basing their theoretical arguments on four basic premises. The first premise being that “collective behaviour is facilitated by situations in which there is uncertainty and confusion. Imitative behaviour follows due to the need for specificity, certainty, and consensus” (Davetian).…
In order to successfully understand minority influence were interested in finding research that determines how those individuals or minority groups who firmly uphold their own deviant or marginal standpoint can have an impact on the belief systems and behavior patterns of other individuals. Research on minority influence is of recent origin. Most research about social influence in particular, were based and entirely focused on conformity, on the way a group affects individuals and brings about social uniformities (Festinger, 1950). Two experiments investigated whether minority influence and conformity operate by the same or by different processes. It was predicted that subjects who were simultaneously exposed to a majority and a minority…
In this article, we will develop a definition of “group mind” in the light of articles such as “opinions and social pressure” by Solomon E. Asch, and “the follower problem” by David brooks. The definition of the group mind that we will develop from these articles will be used to analyze the story “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson. In this article, we will analyze and apply the definition of group mind developed and use it to analyze the story of Shirley Jackson, and use examples from the texts to further Introduction: According to Solomon E. Asch, group mind or thinking of a group of people have a profound effect on the thought procedure of an individual. Solomon says “That social influences shape every person’s practices, judgments and T,…
Majority Opinion The argument about majority opinions not mattering is relevant for a countless amount of reasons. Too many people worry about the opinion of others. Everyone desires to “fit in,” be liked, and receive approval.…
We, as humans, like to believe that we always stand out in a crowd and never conform to please society. This freedom to be an individual is held to a higher degree than most of our other freedoms. Humans believe that we always use this freedom to speak our opinions and rarely admit to changing our views to comply with a group. As much as we deny that we don’t, it seems that more often than not, we follow the crowd. In her article “Group Minds”, Doris Lessing was on the right track when she described how humans stand for choice and individualism, but when faced with the situation, most tend to fall in line with the majority.…
Introduction Social influence is the process used by an individual or group to change the behavior or attitudes of others – and it occurs many times each and every day. Being able to recognize when social influence is occurring and why it takes place is a significant research area of social psychology. There is a wide variety of types of social influence, the most important being conformity, compliance, and obedience. By examining past experiences where social influence occurred, one can understand just how common the influence of others affects our behavior and can help recognize social influence attempts in the future. Like almost everybody, I experience instances of social influence consistently and have determined a specific occasion to…
assume that their decisions are infallibly correct. Because of this assumption, group members are pressured to accept and support the groups decisions, rejecting any contradictory information. In addition to the effects of strong cohesiveness, the groupthink mindset develops due to what are known as emergent group norms, or norms which indicate that the possibility of error does not exist within the group, and therefore further analysis and discussion of the subject at hand is unnecessary. One of the most famous examples of groupthink relates to the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941.…
For this past week, I was able to take in what I observed and explain it through an ethnographic method. These observations opened my eyes through Sociology and gave me a better sociological perspective on our world today. Before this course, I always had that beginner’s mind in the way I saw society. As I made the effort to get a closer look, I was astonished on the outlook of our world today.…
