After reading this article, my perspective changed on the purpose of RTI. I believed that RTI was a system in place to identify students with learning gaps who need instructional supports to be successful in the general education classroom. Often these students and their learning needs go unidentified and therefore they are not able to reach their potential. As an educator, I believe that this integrated model would be beneficial to both teachers and high achieving students. Once students are identified, the teacher can implement data based instructional supports to help our high achieving students reach their full learning potential. These students

Fuchs & Fuchs (2006), make clear that this over-identification can be eliminated by providing solid instruction through a core reading program. Additionally this core program should be complemented by an assessment tool that can identify the needs of the struggling students. In order for the RTI implementation to work in a school setting, the following are essential components that must be implemented with fidelity: (1) All students receive high-quality, research-based instruction in the general education classroom, (2) universal screening, (3) a multi-tiered approach to learning, (4) ongoing progress monitoring, (5) infrastructure, (6) strong leadership, (7) data-based decision making, (8) ongoing training and professional development, (9) collaborative teaming, (10) fidelity of implementation, and parental engagement (Fuchs & Fuchs, 2006). Though there is no single, methodically researched and commonly practiced "model" of the RTI process, it is defined as a three-tier model. However, Georgia uses a 4 Tier delivery model of supports that uses research-based academic and behavioral interventions.…

There is no doubt that racism, classism, and prejudice, amongst other injustices persist within our social structure, but we often tend to ignore the more prominent issue within the spectrum, which includes women’s rights. Whether it’s a matter of simple gender roles or excruciating violence with her domestic partner, women around the world continuously experience the hardships of being born a woman. Prior to enrolling in my Women Studies course, I would have never thought about half the issues that are so clearly gender specific. It was my newly obtained knowledge and curiosity that led me to a new way of thinking as I learned about one of the most important women in my life. I interviewed my mom on how it was like to grow up as a woman in Mexico (her place of birth).…

The role of the student in the RTI change initiative was very limited. The pupils selected for intervention could not choose whether or not to take these classes. Though test scores were consulted, students, themselves, were not consulted during the planning or implementation of the initiative. Students were merely “potential beneficiaries of change” (Fullan, 2006, p. 170). As beneficiaries, these learners were only to be engaged as recipients of the remediation services being offered to them.…

When I delivered the teaching session, the experience was an overall success with students showing a clear interest and engaging in the lesson (Table 1, question 10, mean 4.3). The teaching began with a clear introduction to the key learning points for the whole session (Table 1, question 5, mean 4.3), which allowed the students to understand what the session was going to entail. This was beneficial to those who needed to see the big picture to see how topics fit together[1]. I further explained that the session will be split into three sections and explained that certain learning outcomes will be covered in each section. Student feedback stated that there was “enthusiastic teaching in appropriate sized teaching bites.”…
