If so, then why do people insist on joking on gender stereotypes and racist comment? What’s so comical about sending a woman back to the kitchen, or assuming any non-white male is a delinquent or terrorist? Allowing yourself to laugh along with these stereotypes only proves that we don’t really believe in equality. Women are expected to be dependent, emotional, sensitive, and weak. Men are expected to be independent, aggressive, competitive, and strong. All which are unrealistic views of men and women. Stereotypes are not only based on gender, but also on race. Coming from a Hispanic offspring, I have heard stereotypes about me, e.g., am I an illegal immigrant or do I have an office to clean. There are too many stereotypes and often too offensive to even mention, but it’s not hard to leave it to the imagination. Because of stereotypes, some people have taken it too far with discrimination. Issues keep bombarding our society, like rape culture or protest and civil disorder because of discrimination from our own police. Rape culture primarily involves women seen as sexual objects or blaming them for the rapists actions because they were too provocative. The reason the feminist movement isn’t working is because, ideally it’s a movement for women, but it also requires the support of men as well. That because its work put together. As cliché as it may sound, working together fighting for equality does have a bigger effect if both men and women are involved. If for a moment the roles were reversed, men would most likely think that it is unfair that only they want the change; only then will men realize. The first part to the feminist movement should begin with advocating to men and making them realize the injustice towards women. The problem with racism is that no matter how much time you spend on protests, campaigns, even wars, people will always discriminate against people that shouldn’t “belong.” The sad reality that America hasn’t improved since the 1960’s is truly disappointing. The only way to move past racism begins at home. The next generation should learn that no matter what race you are you should be treated the same. People also need to realize that joking about ethnicity shouldn’t be found comical and is a serious offense. Although America is centered on freedom of speech it doesn’t support hate speech. Discrimination stops with you. I know that next I hear someone tell me a racist or stereotypical comment I will simply ask them to explain I to me, that way they can see how corrupt and
