Extra Credit “EC Media-Influences”
Disney movies are a great way to teach children about morals and values that can help shape children’s characteristics and identity development. Children feel taken away to a fantasy world and parents certainly appreciate those movies for the benefits they carry and the lessons they teach. However, a great deal of Disney movies host gender roles and stereotypes that affects our generation. The Little Mermaid and Frozen are some of the movies we will analyze and explore to see how gender roles, gender behavior are being portrayed; and how these movies teach children the meaning of relationships and sex appeal.

This suggests that women have little choice and freedom when it comes to being married and the man has to make all the important or final decisions. The movie continue to show gender roles through different activities and stereotypes. For instance, girls and boys have separate accomplishments and duties that are gender specific. Ariel kept on singing and brushing her hair while the prince was occupied with fixing the ship and playing with the dog. The idea that males are dominant over females are implemented in the movie as well. Males can have all the freedom they want by wandering everywhere above the sea surface while females (Ariel) are allowed to do a few things. Those movies include implicit messages that are passed on and ingrained into the child’s mind. The issue lies in the process of delivering a viewpoint between the past and the present’s cultural and traditional views. Many of Disney movies have stereotypes embedded in its characters that had been passed on for centuries. Girls should never speak up. Beauty is there number one priority and appearance is more valuable than intellect feature. Women are helpless and in need of protection, women are domestic and likely to marry, and overweight women are ugly, unpleasant, and unmarried. Frozen and the little mermaid provide a great examples of how Disney movies portray its characteristics and embeds many stereotypes that can benefit and deter one’s
