Everyday women around are the victims of major human rights violations. These violations range from being raped, beaten, kidnapped, and killed in third world under developed countries to not being allowed to go to school and be educated in others. To not being able to own property because you are women to being sold and trafficked in the sex trade. To not being paid equally as your male counterparts to being told by your government what is best for your body. Gender inequality is a huge international human rights issue that has been on the table for quite some time now. Over the years there have been many advances in this fight. Today there are hundreds of organizations that help fight for human rights of women and girls. Organizations like the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) who created the international treaty for the rights of women in 1979, or Equality Now who was created in 1992 to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world through the mobilization of public pressure, or Amnesty International who has an international campaign to stop violence against women. IGOs like the United Nations have multiple committees and programs with the purpose of gender equality and women’s rights issues.
In 1995 the then First Lady of the United States and current democratic presidential nominee Hillary Rodham Clinton said “ that human rights are women’s rights and women’s rights are human rights ( Hillary Clinton). Many great strides have been made all around the world in when it comes to gender equality. Those victories were made possible by all of the hard work of those who fought for equality. International organizations played a major part in the women rights movement of the 17th century and they continue to do so today in the gender equality
