Gender Dysphori Gender Identity Disorder

Gender dysphoria, also known as gender identity disorder, is a condition which “involves a conflict between a person’s physical or assigned gender and the gender with which he/she/they identify” (1). People with gender dysphoria may feel significant distress and are more likely to experience depression because they feel a disconnect with their bodies and are unable to function with the correlated norms of their gender (1 &2). Trans genders may behave as their true selves to counter act the depressive symptoms of gender dysphoria: usually trans genders will change their clothing and hairstyles to feel more satisfied with themselves even if they go against the gender norms (1). Another very effective treatment for this disorder according to pediatrician and genealogist Dr. Jason Jaron, is allowing the individual to express their gender in the way they feel is suitable (2). There are three main methods to achieve the desired outcome for people suffering from gender dysphoria; puberty suppression, hormone therapy and surgery (2). Jaron states, puberty blockers are used to “prevent the development of secondary sexual characteristics that may later be difficult to alter, such as Adam’s apple or larger breast” (2). This is achieved with gonadotropin releasing hormone agonists” (2). Adolescences are allowed to receive this treatment when they have reached the “Tanner 2 stage” of puberty (2). If adolescents develop physical characteristics of their gender, then they would have to resort to surgical procedures to modify bodies (2).
