Domestic violence is a social problem but through stricter law enforcement, more public awareness and counselling, this problem can and is being reduced. Many victims do not seek protection from the authority because they are afraid to report the incident as there is some self blame, more so women than men, victims feel they somehow “must have deserved this” or “he did it because he cared”, therefore many women continue to suffer from abuse with no intervention from support programs or the law. Also many women find reasons to justify their spouse’s actions of domestic abuse as well as being afraid to report incidents mostly because they fear the consequences about what will happen to them when their spouses see them again. Women who are subjected to abuse need to understand that they are not the ones at fault. Many men who behave in this manner have psychological and personal issues which are either learned as a child or brought on by their own insecurities. Victims must look into all the available help as there are many agencies that help adults and children in abusive relationships. They range in many different services offering counselling, providing information and emotional support, hotlines you can call for advice, shelters where you can stay, job training, legal services, and childcare ,pretty much whatever is needed to allow for a fresh start and help to get back on track after making the decision to leave their situation and to seek help. Many women don’t seek help as they are unfamiliar with what is available to them.
