Mass Media The media is a huge part of today’s society. It is where the latest trends are shown and the latest news and gossip is spread. It is also where old traditional norms still can be seen. While media tries to cover it more than they used to, it is still evident that these norms still exist. There is still a gap between the equality of men and women. And not just their gender but their race and the stereotypes that are used to define them. Stereotypes are everywhere. They are big. They are small. They are general or they are very detailed. Many of these stereotypes are seen and portrayed through the media. The media shows how people of different races are supposed to act. It shows how different classes are supposed to operate and it also shows the inequalities among the genders. The famous novels and movies, The Twilight Saga, was written by a female. When they went to find a producer for the saga it was turned away multiple times because they did not think it would take off. The producers did not think it would take off because it had a female lead. Many wanted her to rewrite it to have a male lead. They found a small production company that was willing to produce the saga. The director of the movie was a female, who was very good at her job. It took off and became more famous than anyone could have imagined. When it came around the time to produce the second movie they found a male director (Miss Representation). This was a blunt notion that now that the movie was a big hit they thought a male would be better suited to direct it. Males also use to be the main leads in the shows. That has begun to change. Women are beginning to get more important roles and have more important parts. However, “women are starting to be shown as competent, strong, athletic, and in control of their lives rather than ditsy housewives or sex symbols, they still are very physically attractive and are often highly sexualized” (Women’s Voices 260). The women are getting roles but their roles are still not quite as important as the male’s roles. They are also still being portrayed though the male gaze. A now classic movie that is a great example of this is Pretty Woman. It is what one

The underrepresentation of women in the media shows the limitation of freedom they are allowed to get, it targets the entire population of females, and there is no direct cause of this oppression. In this case, men are the ones who receive a group-based benefit because it makes them feel “good” or superior. According to Alison Bailey, “privileges are unearned advantages that are conferred systematically due to one’s being identified as a member of a particular social group” (Privilege, Slide #9). Since men have always been viewed as a dominant figure, they are the ones who benefit from the oppression of women in the media. The negative of a microscopic perspective when it comes to oppression and privilege is that a microscopic view tries to directly find the individual causing the harm whereas oppression and privilege are systematic; there is no single direct cause.…

Media outlook In America today, the media has shaped males and females to have a significant impact on the way both male and females should look and act. Men often act aggressively, never showing any emotion to what is taking place in their lives or around them. Men also depicted as lustful lotharios, constantly on the hunt for a new woman. Have you ever wanted to stand on top of a mountain with a gigantic megaphone embraced in your hands shouting the iconic quote, “You know my name, not my story!” People may have their own judgements and interpretations about your life, but nobody knows you better than yourself. Although this is the case, it’s not the case when it comes to the platform we all count on for news and entertainment, especially when it comes to the topic of race—the mainstream media. The real question is: do racial stereotypes still dominate our western media? Why and how these stereotypes and misrepresentations of race become apparent initially is what should be discussed.…

Stereotypes are very prevalent in the United States today. Throughout my life I have seen these stereotypes. In high school, I went to a predominantly black school and I witnessed not only myself, but also my friends being put into a certain group because of our skin color. When we would go play basketball we would be known as the “white boys” and all people thought we could do was shoot. I thought that maybe it was because they had never seen us before, but then my opinion changed.…
