Gavin Grimm's Case Summary

The current event that I choose was the case of Gavin Grimm v. Gloucester County School Board. Grimm is a transgender student from Virginia that was denied the right to use the bathroom that corresponds with his gender identity. Grimm won against the school board in the federal appeals court, but the court ruled the school had to let Grimm used a unisex bathroom that was created for him. Although Gavin won the case, Gavin feels as though it still excludes him from using the bathroom of the gender identity he identifies with. Gavin and his lawyers decided to take the case to the supreme court and let the court decide on which interpretation of Title IX is correct. His case relates the ongoing political and social issues of allowing transgender individuals to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity. Gavin Grimm’s case will help the United States determine if transgender individuals have protection under Title IX. The general perception of this social problem is mixed. Some people support the bathroom rights of transgender individuals and others oppose it. The main group that supports transgender bathroom rights are the LGBT community and its allies, and the groups that opposes it are mainly anti-LGBT individuals. The media coverage of this event might skew the perception of it by making the public feel optimistic or distasteful of Grimm case. This may make the reader change their on transgender bathroom rights. My opinion on this event and social problem is that Gavin Grimm is doing the right thing by bringing his case to the supreme court. Transgender individuals should have the right to go to the bathroom of their gender identity and shouldn’t be denied that right because of societal norms. From a conflict theorist perspective, some groups do not want to support transgender bathroom rights because they want to assert their power and the status quo over the transgender community and other sexual minorities.
