Andrew Niccol presents Gattaca as a world destroyed by the pursuit of perfection and raises the question of what it means to be human. Niccol explores how personal identity and happiness are destroyed by pursuing perfection through the characters of Irene, Vincent and Jerome. Irene and Vincent struggled with their personal identities because of their genetic imperfections and Eugene suffered from the burden of perfection. Nonetheless, Niccol shows that these issues with perfection and imperfection can be overcome through the character development of Irene, Vincent and Jerome. Gattaca is a science fiction film about the idea of science and technology in the late 20th century, that created an imaginary and futuristic society based on genetic engineering. Gattaca features the actors, Ethan Hawke (Vincent Anton Freeman), Jude Law (Jerome Eugene Morrow), Uma Thurman (Irene Cassini), and Loren Dean (Anton Freeman), to relay the story of a young boy who was conceived outside the eugenics program, and struggles to overcome genetic discrimination and fulfill his dream of traveling into space. In Vincent's society eugenics is very common, and although genetic discrimination is illegal, people are still classified as “invalid” or “Valid” using the biometric system. “Invalids” are naturally conceived specimens, that are…

There has been a centuries-long debate about the influence of nature versus nurture and the conclusion is that both influence a person. This age-old argument is seen in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald as the geography surrounding the characters would create vastly different personalities if set somewhere else. Not only does the state The Great Gatsby is set in impact the whole story, but also the location of where the characters live and, as Thomas C. Foster mentions in How To Read Literature Like A Professor, how “humans inhabiting space. . . the spaces inhabiting humans” (Foster 174) have a profound effect. Set in the city of New York, The Great Gatsby has the perfect location to create an influence on the flow of events, that would not be there if set in another state or area.…

He is well known for publishing 4 books and over 27 articles related to bioethics and philosophy.…

If you had told someone in the early 1800’s that every cell in your body contains something called DNA made of molecules called nucleotides (DNA) that determine every characteristic about you, from your height and eye color to whether or not you’ll get a certain disease or condition, they would think you were crazy. Today, most students learn about DNA in middle school biology. DNA was first discovered by a German biochemist named Frederich Miescher in 1869, but its importance was not realized until 1953 (DNA). Genetic testing, “a type of medical test that identifies changes in chromosomes, genes, or proteins” (What is Genetic Testing?), however, was first done in the 1910s with ABO blood typing (O’Neil). Today, testing is used for determining paternity, determining a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder, and to confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition (What is genetic testing?).…

Society’s views on the inferior is crucial in shaping them as individuals with differences down to science, however their personality highlights who they are. Gattaca explores the pre-existent reputation of “invalids”, suggesting no matter what you are, society has the presumption that you are not worthy enough of a superior life. The separation casted between “valids” and “invalids”, suggests society values one’s place and purpose over an individual’s personality and qualities. Gattaca’s tagline “there’s no gene for the human spirit” contradicts the film itself, as a person's self-worth cannot be measured by their genes. However, throughout the film, the dystopian society is isolated into two groups depending on what you are.…

The letters are arranged in the molecule in a very specific way, with A only reacting with T (and vice versa) and G only reacting with C (and vice versa). The biological structure in Jerome’s apartment resembles a DNA strand, also known as a double helix.…

“How does the author of Gattaca use one or more of the following techniques to develop ideas: Symbolism, Juxtaposition and flashbacks.” Andrew Niccol’s ‘Gattaca’ presents us with a futuristic utopia where genetic enhancement is a normality and society now has discrimination down to a science. The film explores the life of Vincent Freeman, a degenerate who is denied the opportunity to achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut due to his inferior DNA. Vincent adopts the identity of renowned swimmer and genetically engineered Jerome Morrow, in order to pursue his lifelong dream of obtaining a position in the Gattaca Aerospace Corporation and travel to space. Using the character Vincent Freeman ,the inclusion as a protagonist, is essential to show the ideas presented in Gattaca, while he escapes the trap of genetic determinism proving that the importance of the whole genetic makeup in Gattaca is too much of over reaction.
